Tapas, vino tinto, flamenco…we don’t have to list all the things that are awesome about Spain.
But choosing between the beaches of Ibiza, the culture of Madrid and always-artsy Barcelona holidays is tough. Instead of quitting your job for a six-month Espana tour, check out our Valencia packages. This city on the eastern Mediterranean coast has it all—so much, in fact, that you may not want to leave!
First stop: The literal Holy Grail, the cup that Jesus drank from at the Last Supper, which is at Valencia Cathedral. Several cities claim to have it, but who are you going to trust, those other guys or a king named “Alfonso the Magnanimous”? That’s what we thought. There’s one thing on your holiday in Valencia that isn’t disputed though: the awesomeness of the City of Arts and Sciences. It’s got Europe’s biggest aquarium, a 3D movie theatre, interactive science museum and Mediterranean botanical garden. Yep, it’s sort of a big deal.
We have to mention the beaches. Malvarosa, the city’s most popular, is wide and long—really long, at 4 km. Bring a picnic (may we suggest almonds, olives and local cheeses), throw down a towel and dine to a soundtrack of waves and sea breezes. Ahh…that’s what a Valencia holiday is all about.
If all that money you saved with our package deals to Valencia is burning a hole in your pocket, you’ll find the cure for your too-much-money blues at Boulevard Austria shopping mall. Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy Lladro porcelain, made in Valencia and sure to impress your new beau. If you’d rather save your cash for wine, do some window shopping on Calle de La Paz, which also has plenty of boutiques and art galleries where you can pick up souvenirs.
Carrying all those bags is exhausting your muscles need protein, stat. Luckily for you, Valencia has a few tricks (or dishes) up its sleeve. It’s the birthplace of paella, and the variations on this seafood-and-rice stew are endless. Dessert time means horchata de chufa, a nutty milk of sorts, dipped in fartons. If you’ll stop giggling, you’ll learn these sugar-dusted pastries are delicious. Can’t get enough of those sweet buns? Snap up one of lastminute.co.nz’s awesome car rentals in Valencia and head 6 km north to Alboraia to see the tiger nut fields and swig the freshest horchata around—served with fartons of course.
When the sun goes down, well, the nightlife is just getting started. Warm up with a performance at the Palace of Catalan Music or an opera at the Reina Sofia Palace of the Arts, then head to Barrio del Carmen in the Old Town. The wine and tapas flow freely at the bohemian bars, and there will be music, dancing and plenty of “Oles”! (Just kidding, don’t actually yell that.)
Forgot about your upcoming holiday leave or—gasp—anniversary? No pasa nada (no worries). With lastminute.co.nz, you can get cheap Valencia packages that make it look like you planned this ages ago.
