A South Coast weekend escape
When I was younger, my holidays were always spent on the NSW Mid-North Coast, and so it wasn’t until recently that I dared to venture south, and I’m glad that I did.
The endless beaches and little country towns make the NSW South Coast a trip that’s not to be missed. Just under two hours from Sydney, Gerringong is a coastal town that many people know only because they drive past it on their way to the snowfields. But believe me, Gerringong has plenty to offer.

Mr LML and I arrive at Mercure Gerringong by the Sea around midday, leaving us plenty of time to wander around and check out the stunning scenery. From the hotel we can see lush green rolling hills that take away the breath of a city slicker like me.

The hotel itself is large and modern, with two pools that greet us on arrival. After checking in we head toward our room and notice a sign that leads us around the back of the property. We are pleasantly surprised to find an adults’ only pool and tennis court for guests’ private use. If only we’d brought our tennis gear!

Our spacious room is located around the back of the hotel, with a balcony overlooking the pool and tennis court. The cosy queen bed is tempting in the cool weather but I must drag myself away and to the onsite day spa. Sigh… what a tough life.

Bellachara Spa Gerringong is located at the top of a flight of stairs and has amazing views out over the property, hinterland and ocean.
As I step inside the heated room, I am greeted by the friendly staff and popped down on the couch with a pot of jasmine tea. The tea is just what I need and let me tell you, I’m ready to be pampered.

Stumbling out bleary-eyed after my relaxing treatment, I get no reprieve as sightseeing is on the menu. A south coast regular, Mr LML tells me that we must see the beach, and so to the beach we go!
Sadly, although the water is probably quite warm, the incoming clouds convince me to stay on the sand and admire from afar.

Before nightfall, a short drive to Berry (15-20 minutes away) is necessary and we spend the rest of the day checking out the infamous Berry Sourdough Cafe, The Berry Tea Shop, and the many other boutique offerings of the area.
Now, it’s no secret that breakfast is a make-or-break deal for me. And fortunately, Mercure Gerringong by the Sea proves to me that buffet breakfasts can be exciting.
With fresh seasonal fruit, house-made bircher muesli, hot brekkie options, a variety of delicious grainy bread, and even a pancake machine, this breakfast certainly lives up to my expectations.

Upon a very hesitant post-breakfast departure, Mr LML and I make one last trip into town for some breath-taking snaps of the beach.

Gerringong, you’ve won my heart and I swear to never drive past you again.
