Australia’s most romantic getaways
When it comes to Valentine’s Day, I’m not really one for PDAs.
After all, leaving the house on the most romantic day of the year is likely to mean hitting the same restaurants as the rest of Australia’s loved-up couples. I’m a big believer in enjoying the company of my partner, and so when it comes to Valentine’s Day, I much prefer to escape the crowds and check into a lush hotel for the weekend.
Yes, the big day is creeping closer, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to get your lover something spesh. Even if it’s not for this weekend, there are plenty of romantic stays around Oz, and if you book now, you’ll earn some serious brownie points with your better half.
Here are my top six picks for a spontaneous romantic getaway all year round:
Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa, Blue Mountains NSW

Recently winning Australia’s Best Hotel in the 2014 TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards, Wolgan Valley is the place to go if you’re looking for a seriously luxe stay within driving distance of Sydney. Located in the Blue Mountains, Wolgan Valley is just under three hours by car from Sydney, or 45 minutes by helicopter…because, why not?
Lakehouse, Daylesford VIC

Daylesford is famous for three things: hot springs, gourmet food, wine, and the Lakehouse, a 35 room hotel that sits by the – you guessed it – lake. With one of Australia’s most awarded restaurants and cellars, and the onsite Salus Day Spa, the Lakehouse is ideal if you’re looking for a truly tranquil break.
Spicer’s Peak Lodge, Maryvale QLD

Spicer’s Peak is located in the Scenic Rim of South East Queensland, a short two hour drive from Brisbane. The lodge is the highest non-alpine lodge in Australia – sitting atop a 9,000 acre private cattle property, offering spectacular views of the World Heritage listed Main Range National Park and Great Dividing Range.
With a chef’s hat under its belt, as well as awards for Best Fine Dining 2012 and Best Luxury Accommodation in Queensland 2011, this is one retreat that will blow your socks off… unless you already lost them on the helicopter ride there.
Barossa Pavilions, Lyndoch SA

Situated in Lyndoch in the Barossa Valley, Barossa Pavilions consist of six freestanding architectural pavilions that are designed exclusively for one couple, resulting in an indulgent and refreshingly peaceful retreat for you and your partner.
With an abundance of acclaimed South Australian wineries and restaurants nearby, your tastebuds will be spoilt for choice when you stay at Barossa Pavilions. Although, with a gourmet hamper, wine and other local treats provided during your stay, you will definitely find it very difficult to leave your pavilion – I certainly did.
Saffire Freycinet, Coles Bay TAS

A luxury coastal sanctuary on Tasmania’s East Coast, Saffire Freycinet captures the essence of the unique region, connecting with its environment to create an authentic, enriching and rejuvenating experience.
With only twenty suites available to book, Saffire is distinct in its design, exclusive in its features, and set apart by its approach to tailor one-on-one service. And did I mention that you can arrive by helicopter, fixed wing plane, chauffeur-driven or in a prestige Audi A6? Or you could just hire a car like the rest of us…
Berkeley River, Broome WA

Accessible only by air or water, Berkeley River screams exclusivity and indulgence. Twenty ocean view suites sit on a coastal dune overlooking the Timor Sea, Reveley Island and the mouth of the stunning Berkeley River.
If you venture away from the comfort of your private chalet, you can fly by helicopter to locations rarely visited. Romantic picnics, heli-fishing and scenic aerial journeys are just some of the activities that are available during your luxe getaway.
Are you too spontaneous and have really left it to the last minute? There are plenty more options for a romantic getaway here.
