{"id":32154,"date":"2014-03-05T08:30:25","date_gmt":"2014-03-04T22:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"\/\/www.lastminute.com.au\/vc\/blog\/?p=32154"},"modified":"2015-03-11T12:28:34","modified_gmt":"2015-03-11T02:28:34","slug":"a-shoppers-guide-to-milan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/a-shoppers-guide-to-milan\/","title":{"rendered":"A shopper\u2019s guide to Milan"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<div class=\"pinkLinks\">This is my first visit to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/accommodation\/italy\/milan?cid=social=blog:lmau:retail::SM19:\">Milan<\/a> but it only takes me one day to realise that in this city, shopping could qualify as an Olympic sport.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"pinkLinks\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pinkLinks\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just the endless variety of boutiques. Or the fact that you can shop your little heart out tax-free (did someone say cash back \u2026? Yes please!). Here, in one of the fashion capitals of the world, it\u2019s more about an <em>attitude.<\/em> They treat shopping with <em>respect<\/em>. It\u2019s almost as if shopping is considered an <em>&#8220;art form&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The pretty cobblestone streets of <strong>Via della Spiga<\/strong> and <strong>Via Montenapoleone <\/strong>are fashionista shopping heaven &#8211; home to all the famous Italian brands (Fendi, Prada, Versace, Armani, Cavalli) with incredibly glamorous multi-level stores.<\/p>\n<p>I have my first <em>&#8220;moment&#8221;<\/em> on <strong>Via Spiga.<\/strong> I\u2019m drawn to the <strong>Dolce &amp; Gabbana <\/strong>store by the completely O.T.T. window display &#8211; a Christmas feast verging on almost obscenely opulent proportions. This store is the heart, soul and home of the famous brand &#8211; with every square metre caressing racks of exquisite clothing and any object you could possibly purchase with a <strong>D<\/strong> and a <strong>G<\/strong> on the label.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dg-window.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32166 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dg-window-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\" \" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dg-window-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dg-window-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dg-window-335x446.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dg-window-1050x1400.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>The store even has its own maid, dressed in the traditional black and white, dusting shelves and serving coffee. I\u2019m so in awe, I\u2019m compelled to buy something \u2026 anything. And even though I end up buying the cheapest thing I can find &#8211; a bottle of 23 Euro nail polish \u2013 it\u2019s taken away, gift wrapped and presented to me as if I&#8217;d spent thousands. The Milanese love to celebrate the &#8220;art&#8221; of the &#8220;shop&#8221;.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32156 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG2-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\" \" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG2-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG2-335x335.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG2-1050x1050.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>I had heard that Milanese shopping assistants are selective about who they consider <em>worth<\/em> serving, fawning over wealthy Russian and Chinese women accompanied by assistants carrying their bags, and ignoring everyone else. However, I stumble into <strong>D&amp;G <\/strong>during my morning stroll wearing my walking clothes, ugg boots and no makeup (and certainly no assistant carrying my water bottle) and I\u2019m treated like a valued customer.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32167 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\" \" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG-335x335.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DG-1050x1050.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>From the splendiferous to the ridiculous, check out Milliner <strong>Alan Journo<\/strong> on <strong>Via Spiga.<\/strong> Sure, the word Milliner has it\u2019s origin in the city\u2019s name but I\u2019m not sure that justifies the <em>3000 Euro price tags<\/em> for the hats and fascinators on display! I\u2019m sure Journo considers it the height of head couture, but why any woman would want to wear a beanie with a veil to the races is beyond me?<\/p>\n<p>If you like designer labels without the pricey tag, you\u2019ll love the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmagazine.it\/\">DMagazine Outlet <\/a>on <strong>Manzoni<\/strong> in central Milan. If you\u2019re prepared to elbow your way through the racks, you\u2019ll find a fabulous selection of designers at seriously reduced prices \u2026 Herve Leger, Givenchy, Roland Mouret, Chloe, Gucci, Dior.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dmagazine-outlet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32157 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dmagazine-outlet-709x1024.jpg\" alt=\" \" width=\"709\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dmagazine-outlet-709x1024.jpg 709w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dmagazine-outlet-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dmagazine-outlet-335x483.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dmagazine-outlet-1050x1515.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>If you love a bargain, you should visit one of the nearby Outlet Malls. I chose Europe&#8217;s biggest outlet centre, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcarthurglen.com\/\">Serraville <\/a>&#8211; about an hour\u2019s drive from Milan. There aren\u2019t as many brands as I find at the American Designer Outlet Malls but on the plus side, there is extra stock at the famous European labels like Prada, Armani, Gucci and Burberry.<\/p>\n<p>You can pay homage to the art of shopping at one of world\u2019s oldest shopping malls. With its enormous glass dome, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitamilano.it\/\">Galleria Vittorio Emanuele<\/a> in central Milan is worth seeing by day and night for both the shops AND the photos ops. Prada\u2019s flagship store is here and there&#8217;s a really great affordable Italian brand called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stefanel.com\/\">Stefanel <\/a>where they give you sparkling wine as you browse in the store after 6pm.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/galleria.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32162 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/galleria-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\" \" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/galleria-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/galleria-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/galleria-335x446.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/galleria-1050x1400.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>You\u2019ll find Italy\u2019s most elegant department store, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rinascente.it\/\">La Rinascente <\/a>in central Milan \u2013 with ten levels of fashion and heaps of great brands you won\u2019t find at Myer or DJ&#8217;s. There&#8217;s a wonderful food court on the top floor with ah-may-zing coffee and speccy views overlooking Milan&#8217;s most famous landmark &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duomomilano.it\/\">The Duomo<\/a> (grab a table on the terrace if you can).<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-Duomo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32168 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-Duomo-767x1024.jpg\" alt=\" \" width=\"767\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-Duomo-767x1024.jpg 767w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-Duomo-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-Duomo-335x446.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-Duomo-1050x1400.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 100vw, 767px\" \/><\/a>\n<p><strong>Culture, darling!<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you\u2019re after a little culture to break up the shopping, Milan has a couple of absolute stunners!<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/duomo-roof-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32160 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/duomo-roof-4-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\" \" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/duomo-roof-4-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/duomo-roof-4-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/duomo-roof-4-335x446.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/duomo-roof-4-1050x1400.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>The <strong>&#8220;Duomo di Milano&#8221;<\/strong> is a 14th century gothic cathedral with strikingly beautiful spires and apparently more statues than any other building in the world. It&#8217;s free to look inside but you can pay a few euros and walk on the rooftop. You can catch a lift or burn off that pasta you had the night before and walk the 250 stairs to the top. The views are bellisimo!<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Duomo-Roof.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32161 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Duomo-Roof-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\" \" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Duomo-Roof-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Duomo-Roof-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Duomo-Roof-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Duomo-Roof-335x335.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Duomo-Roof-1050x1050.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>The other Milan must-see is <strong>&#8220;The Last Supper&#8221;<\/strong>, which you can view at the <strong>Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie.<\/strong> Whilst a viewing of the <strong>&#8220;Mona Lisa&#8221;<\/strong> at the Louvre in Paris is often considered a little underwhelming, the beauty of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tickitaly.com\/\">&#8220;The Last Supper&#8221;<\/a> in all its glory is completely overwhelming. The moment I lay eyes upon Da Vinci\u2019s finest fresco literally brings me to tears. In an effort to minimise exposure to dust and pollution, only 30 people are allowed to view it every 15 minutes. Recently renovated and really reasonably priced, the rooms are clean and stylish (and there\u2019s enough room for that extra suitcase you\u2019ll no doubt have to buy to fit in all your shopping). It\u2019s in a fantastic location &#8211; within easy walking distance to all the great shopping and <strong>The Duomo.<\/strong> And there\u2019s a subway station right at the front door to take you anywhere you want to go!<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2013\/11\/mercure-milano.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32164 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/last-minute\/blog\/uploads\/2014\/03\/mercure-milano-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\" \" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/mercure-milano-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/mercure-milano-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/mercure-milano-72x54.jpg 72w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/mercure-milano-335x251.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.lastminute.co.nz\/vc\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/mercure-milano-1050x787.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>This was my first visit to Milan and it certainly won\u2019t be my last. If you\u2019re a shopaholic and you\u2019re serious about your craft, Milan will not disappoint!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to eat<\/strong><br \/>\nThe other thing that will rock your world in Milan is the food.<\/p>\n<p>For something traditional, try the cozy family run <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anticatrattoriadellapesa.com\/\">Antica Trattoria Della Pesa<\/a> &#8211; famous for their Osso Bucco and their Milanese Risotto (which I discovered is risotto with saffron, onion and <em>LOTS <\/em>of butter.) If you&#8217;re super hungry, order the schnitzel. I saw four grown men dividing up one schnitzel to share. It&#8217;s THAT big.<\/p>\n<p>For a local feel, try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noburestaurants.com\/\">Nobu<\/a> in the super posh <strong>Armani Hotel. <\/strong> You\u2019ll get plenty of attitude from the staff and you\u2019ll leave smelling like an ashtray but the food is fun and the people-watching is fabulous. It\u2019s not pleasant to have people puffing away at the next table while you&#8217;re trying to enjoy your &#8220;Selezione di Sashimi&#8221;, but that&#8217;s the norm here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dorchestercollection.com\/en\/milan\/hotel-principe-di-savoia\/restaurants-bars\/acanto-restaurant\/\">Acanto Restaurant<\/a> in the 5 star <strong>Hotel Principe di Savoia<\/strong> is a little pricey but the classic Italian cuisine is guaranteed to give you multiple food orgasms. There\u2019s an exquisite wine list to match and this is the only restaurant in the world where my handbag was given its own &#8220;seat&#8221; at the table. Plenty of bars offer free food between 6-8pm &#8211; everything from bruschetta and pizza to olives and octopus &#8211; just sitting there in platters on the bar \u2026 FREE! Competition between bars is fierce, so they all try and out-do one another on the food front in an effort to lure you in.<\/div>\n<div class=\"pinkLinks\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"pinkLinks\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Have you shopped in Milan?
