Family house near Elie, golf, beaches, sea view, great base for the East Neuk

Large family house available with stunning sea and hill views, perfect for families and friends, plenty of space for 7 or 8. This lovely family home is much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside! There is plenty of space over 3 floors to spread yourself out, as well as a sunny garden.
The name Steamdrifter comes from the kind of steam powered fishing boats once built in the village and used by the locals for fishing around the coast of Scotland. St Monans is still very proud of its boat building and fishing heritage.
The ground floor has an open plan living room with wood burning stove, smart TV, kitchen with huge island with bar stools and a solid oak floor. This leads through to a huge conservatory which contains the dining table, as well as a sofa and comfy chairs for relaxing and enjoying the view over the garden. There's garden furniture and a barbecue set for al fresco dining.
On the first floor is the master bedroom, a very large room with views over the harbour and the village, with an ensuite shower and toilet. Next door is a sweet twin room overlooking the back garden, beside the family bathroom.
Up the next staircase are 2 more bedrooms, a single room with great sea views, and a lovely double room looking over the hills and farmland to the north. There is also another sitting room facing south, with an open fire, and the best views of all, uninterrupted views over the Firth of Forth to the Bass rock, Berwick Law and the coast of East Lothian. Watch the ships going up and down, keep an eye out for dolphins!
The wifi signal is excellent on every floor, perfect for keeping in touch with family on Zoom or if you have a bit of work to do on Teams.
Rental includes basket of logs for wood-burning stove, coal for open fire on top floor, fresh eggs from our own hens when available. All towels and linen provided. Large shed at the bottom of the garden is perfect for cycles or canoes.
There is a grocery shop in the village and local supermarkets are well stocked and uncrowded. There are plenty of cafes and takeaways in the area if you don't want to cook.
This pretty village is a great base for exploring the East Neuk, with the beaches of Elie for swimming, sea-kayaking, sailing and canoeing, golf courses at Elie and Charleton, and of course St Andrews only 12 miles away. There are quirky shops, fine dining, historic sights and countryside walks all within a few minutes drive. Trips to the Highlands, Perthshire or Edinburgh are all easy from here. The village is about an hours drive from Edinburgh airport.
The East Pier Smokehouse and the Giddy Gannet provide good food all day while award-winning Craig Millar's seafood restaurant is there for fine dining. Pittenweem has galleries and cafes including the outstanding Cocoa Tree, with fabulous hot chocolate, and the best fish and chip shop in the area. The Cheese Farm is just along the road, for more than cheese, great lunches too. Ardross Farm shop can supply every need and Barnett's artisan breads are justly famous - feta and beetroot is one of my favourites. Kellie Castle with its wonderful garden is well worth a visit. Genteel Crail along the coast tempts with teashops and souvenirs. There's fresh and smoked fish from St Monans, and Balgove Farm Shop on the edge of St Andrews.
The house will be sanitized for each new set of guests and check-in is via a key in the key safe so no need to meet anyone unless you want to.

This is a great property from which to explore the East Neuk of Fife and beyond, which is a very pleasant part of the world, like Cornwall but without the crowds. St Andrews is a short hop away, and Edinburgh is a do-able day trip. The property is well laid-out with plenty of room and outside space, and is the sort of place you can feel instantly 'at home' in. We have not rated it five star as it would benefit from a refresh - deep clean some carpets, remove marks from walls, clean and paint some window frames. One irksome feature was that the blind for the window in the ensuite did not fully cover the window, and as the glass was not frosted, the gap had to be blocked with folded towels. The main bathroom also lacked a blind, though that was less of an issue. The property owner was also more 'hands on' than we usually experience, visiting the property three times over the stay - taking the bins out, doing something in the garden, and an odd third visit where she requested access for a 'new valuation' for the property. She arrived with a 'valuer' who had a clipboard of blank paper; he dashed around the house, missing out some rooms, and was gone within minutes. Maybe the sight of the folded towels on the window ledge previously had prompted the need for this 'new valuation', who knows?
Super harbour area and coastal walks.

Walking Ladies

Seven middle-aged ladies enjoyed 4 days walking sections of the Fife Coastal Path, as well as trying out some of the tidal bathing pools nearby. The location of the house was perfect, as was the ample space in the downstairs living areas. We did get our 3 cars parked out front, although the street is a bit tight. The area is very quiet and we enjoyed the sunny garden.

Beautiful house for family meet ups

We had a wonderful time staying in this large, cosy, homely house as a family. There was plenty of room for everyone with great facilities. The house was warm and easy to find. St Monans itself was the perfect harbour village. We enjoyed the local cafe and walks along the coastal path. It was a perfect and relaxing break

This is a beautiful house in a lovely little seaside village. We've stayed before and weren't disappointed on our return visit. It's warm, comfortable, spacious and perfect for a family celebration. The small sitting room on the top floor has spectacular views.

Excellent holiday/family house

On arrival we were immediately impressed by the location, size and comfort of this fully equipped house. Nothing has been forgotten. The rear garden is an additional extra as it is a suntrap. The house is also in a great location to join the Fife Coastal Path and/or to drive to any of the Fife coastal villages. All in all we would highly recommend this family home should you be visiting St Monans or surrounding areas.
