If I was to sum up my experience in two words it would be, absolutely spectacular! From the intimate and personal service to the exceptionally appointed rooms and breathtaking scenery! I recently stayed in the “Executive Room with Castle View”—and it was one of the most misleading, mediocre experiences I’ve ever had. Musty Odor The lobby and my room reeked of damp and mildew. At a five‑star property, I expected fresh, clean air, not a scent that suggested months without proper ventilation. Spa View, Not Castle I paid extra for a “sweeping castle vista with a moat and swan.” Instead, my window faced the spa: frosted glass walls and noisy steam rooms—no stone walls, no moat, no swan. False Advertising The online photos feature a serene pond and swan that simply don’t exist. That’s not a minor detail—it’s deceptive marketing that ruined any sense of romance. Restaurant Fiasco Despite boasting an on‑site restaurant, the hotel turned away its own guests at dinner. We were left with a tiny snack nook and a handful of bar stools. A five‑star hotel should never treat guests like afterthoughts. Friendly Staff, Flat Experience Yes, the front‑desk and bar staff were polite—but kindness can’t compensate for a musty room, misleading views, nonexistent amenities, and no proper dinner seating. Bottom Line: If you value honesty, genuine views, and basic courtesy (like a dinner table), look elsewhere. This property trades on fantasy images and delivers only disappointment.

Grand Barrail is a proper 5 star experience, the hotel is stunning, the staff are excellent, the food is also excellent, we couldn’t leave after two nights so we added a third, one of the nicest places we’ve ever stayed! Almost forgot the spa, simply wonderful! There’s a mint mist!

Our stay here was absolutely perfect. The staff is incredible. The rooms are impeccable. The restaurant (we had breakfast and dinner) was divine. I was so sad to leave this spot and considered canceling the rest of our vacation to stay here instead. Great detail to our room to make it comfortable. Great location. Self parking. Great breakfast with cool to order omelets. Dinner is wonderful and great wine list.

This is the most gorgeous hotel and restaurant. Everyone treated us as valued guests and the service in the dining room was impeccable. We loved everything about it - highly recommend dinner and petit dejeuner. The food was top notch. Wish we could have stayed longer - one night was not enough. We'll be back!

Great relaxing place

The weather was perfect. The only complaint I have were my allergies. One of the negatives pointed out by the hotel staff was the swan and her nest on site with the male being very protective but we thought it was amazing! Highly recommend taking advantage of the spa.

The hotel and grounds are well maintained. Lovely! The front desk service was superb. However, the service at the buffet was very inconsistent. Be sure to ask about egg options. Don’t always offer them to you. Doesn’t appear there is a system for clearing tables, managing the buffet and sharing options with customers. Stay away from the buffer during last 45 minutes. Service even more disjointed.

Was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. Saint Emilion is only a short drive away and the staff was able to assist us in getting us there an back. The attention to detail is like no other when it comes to everything at the chateau. From the grounds to the incredible dinner we had. This is a truly beautiful property. Our room was spacious and well laid out and the common areas were all just lovely. The main dining room, in particular, was stunning with its stained glass windows and domed ceiling at one end. We had dinner here on our first night and really enjoyed the tasting menu, which turned into more courses than was on the menu. Staff were extremely attentive and my daughter appreciated their support as she practised her French -- something she rarely gets to do in her work in London. The property is part of a chateau so you have the vineyards all around you, and there's a beautiful terrace where you can sit for a drink to admire the view. Also, it's a short drive to other chateaux in St. Emilion and an easy drive to other places such as Sauternes and Margaux. Parking is free. We also used taxis and Ubers for dinners out so we didn't have to worry about driving on dark country roads. Will definitely stay here again on my next visit to Bordeaux.
