Cheap Flights To Athens

There’s nothing ordinary about Athens. Sure, it’s the birthplace of democracy and home to some pretty impressive classical architecture, but that’s just scratching on the surface. Get ready for misadventures in Plaka Square, playing foodie at the Central Market and yeah, exploring the ruins. It’s all in a day’s work after booking one of lastminute.co.nz’s cheap flights to Athens.

Getting Around Athens

The ancient Greeks were cool with sandals and horses, so you should be, too. Just kidding. The Athens Metro system is pretty decent, and a lot of Athenians use buses and taxis. Bicycles stand in for chariots these days.

When You Land…

If you’re on Athens flights that land in the morning, “Greek out” at some of the historic ruins that dot the city. Marvel at the Acropolis. Ponder your destiny at the Temple of Hephaestus. Check out the chicks holding up the roof at the Erechtheion (really). Even if you don’t start reciting bits of The Iliad on the spot, you’re sure going to see a lot of awesome columns.

Afternoon arrivals should dump off their bags at one of our hotels in Athens and head for the Central Market. Fresh seafood and meats are the primary offering, but you can also find plenty of spices, olives and cheese. Make yourself an entire meal. You’re welcome.

If you’re on flights to Athens that arrive in the evening, go right to the Plaka neighbourhood. Yes, its old, colourful buildings and charming street corners are a photo shoot waiting to happen, but this place doesn’t just look awesome. It’s got heaps of restaurants, cafes and boutiques for you to explore. We recommend gyros for yourself and jewellery for Mum.

Live Like a Local

The Athenians were always renowned as thinkers (at least, that’s what the movie 300 told us), and these days they exercise their brains in puzzle rooms. Picture it: You, your travel buddies and some locals locked in a room. You have an hour to escape before you are devoured by zombies. Actually, that last part won’t happen (we’re pretty sure they just let you go), but it’s a great way to exercise your brain and make new friends during your getaway.

Speaking of getaways, we think it’s about time you tell your boss where he can stick those red-flagged emails. Book one of lastminute.co.nz’s Athens holiday packages and get ready to get your Greek on.
