Stay at the Capulin Volcano View House, a quiet ranch bunkhouse surrounded by wide-open spaces and some of the darkest night skies in New Mexico—and the country.
The property sits under the same exceptionally dark skies as Capulin Volcano National Monument, an International Dark Sky Park, with the west-facing view dominated by Capulin Volcano itself.
The Space:
The Capulin Volcano View House is a classic bunkhouse-style retreat with an open-concept layout designed for families or groups.
The main room features two sets of bunk beds, each with a queen bed on the lower level and a twin bed on top, along with a combined living and kitchen area. Custom log furniture handcrafted by Nathaniel Franklin adds to the rustic character of the space.
The full kitchen includes a gas cooktop, oven, and full-size refrigerator, making it easy to prepare meals together. Outside, the patio offers a table for six and comfortable seating, ideal for outdoor dining or relaxing after a day of exploring.
The Bunkhouse includes two ¾ bathrooms (shower, toilet, sink), providing added convenience for group stays.
Guests are welcome to explore the surrounding gardens, which feature local and native plants along with water features that create a peaceful setting.
The property also includes a solar-heated greenhouse, built from trees harvested on the ranch, reflecting the property’s focus on sustainability and thoughtful land use.
Guests have access to the private east-facing porch, which includes a picnic table, chairs, and a fire pit. The fire pit is lightweight and should be moved out from under the porch before use.
The long dirt road leading to the Bunkhouse is often enjoyed for walking. Guests are asked to check with us before using this area if livestock are present.
The Neighborhood:
The best part... no neighborhood! This is a remote and wonderful place to get away. Dark skies and quiet nights are the norm.
Getting Around:
For the most part the Bunkhouse is accessible by 2 wheel drive vehicle. There is a 4 mile drive down a well maintained dirt road. If there is a particular weather event please reach out ahead of time so we can be expecting you and available if you have any issues getting in.
Other Things to Note:
Limited Local Amenities: While there aren’t many restaurants or grocery stores nearby, you’ll find a cafe in Des Moines and a gas station that carries some basic necessities, including a selection of alcohol.
Country Living: Expect bugs, dust, and tons of wildlife. It’s all part of the charm and natural beauty of the area!
This is a quiet ranch setting designed for a slower, more intentional pace. We’re available by message if you need anything during your stay and are happy to help, while always respecting guest privacy.
A Relaxed, Homey Stay: Our space is comfortable and cozy, with plenty of character. But it’s not the same as staying in a hotel. We offer a laid-back, personal experience where you can relax, unplug, and enjoy the beauty of nature.
The ranch shares the same dark-sky conditions as Capulin Volcano National Monument, making it ideal for stargazing on clear nights.
Interaction with Guests:
We’re available by text or message if you have questions or need assistance during your stay. We respect guest privacy and are happy to interact as much—or as little—as you prefer.
