The setting could not have been more gorgeous at this house, set along a lovely fjord with crystal blue ocean waters. We spent hours relaxing in the Icelandic "hot pot" (hot tub) in the rear of the property, soaking muscles and clearing our minds. (Unfortunately we were not as lucky as other reviewers and did not see any whales, but we did spot a seal near the local harbor.)The house was clean and spacious, easily big enough for 4-5 people. Owner Thomas emailed us a very helpful, 30-page guide to the house and surrounding region, with advice on local attractions. If you like to kayak, I'd recommend checking out Cape Tours, which is based a block away, and whale-watching in Hauganes, directly across the harbor.Grenivik is a bit out of the way. It's about a half-hour's drive from Akureyri and adds that much more time to trips to Lake Myvatn, Dettifoss, Husavik. etc. But to us, it was worth it to enjoy the beauty and isolation. We loved our stay.

The best location we stayed in Iceland

This host has a modern place with everything you need. Including a coffee pot and microwave. The hot tub was warmer than the previous place we stayed which was nice. Only things I’d add is ice cube trays. Location was great and view amazing.

Beautiful house with some quirks

The house is beautiful and well cared for, and a great home base for outdoor activities in the Grenivik area. It's a bit remote if you're exploring more regionally. I think we may have been the first visitors of the season so there were a few things overlooked (snow-blocked driveway, among others), but the owner was very responsive about issues. That said, if you're in a caretaker role, it's not a great fit. There's not a single comfortable seat in the house to sit and look out at the water. The couch is comfortable but below grade and down a narrow stair in a room that can't be heard from the rest of the house. That level of separation of the lower level might be perfect for some, but for us it presented challenges. I would have been so grateful for a single place to sit on the main level that wasn't a bed or a dining chair. A paver or two on the way to the hot tub would also be helpful, so we weren't tracking moss and mud into it. It's also not a great fit if your knees are a little stiff after a long hike. Aside from the difficult interior stair, the first step at the front is a doozy, especially when managing the luggage. Minor inconveniences yes, but the sort of thing that tells you the house hasn't been lived in. The kitchen was well-stocked with dishes and appliances, the heat and washer/dryer all worked well, and the presentation was clean and tidy.

Great stay in a great location

House was clean and very spacious. Plenty of heat and hot water. Being right on the water was wonderful. We used the hot tub almost every night. Our first night there, a pod of whales swam by while we were in the hot tub. Grenivik is a lovely location, a quiet town about half an hour from the city and all its amenities. It was a great launching point for all the local attractions. The hosts were super helpful. We left an important bag behind with laptop, passports, medication, etc. and they mailed it back to the States for us.

Beautiful house right on water in quiet village

The house is beautiful and comfortable. It was so nice to have a washer and dryer to do laundry. We also enjoyed using the Hot Pot at the end of long days hiking. The village is small and quiet. Plan ahead form groceries and supplies as Akureyri is about a 30 minute drive for groceries…..

I would only suggest that there be a house number on the building , slightly confusing and moving the stereo in the back dresser and putting a small sofa against the railing! Give an area to relax in.

Perfect place to stay in Northern Iceland!

We were so pleased with our time at Vallholt! Our family of 5 enjoyed the layout of the house, the view, and the quiet town. We were able to drive and explore the surrounding areas with ease and then soak in the hot tub after a day of exploring. I could not imagine a more perfect place to stay.

Amazing Time in Grenivik

Myself and a group of friends made the trip to Grenivik for Spring Break, and had a wonderful time in town thanks to the Vrbo provided by Thomas. Everything from details about amenities in the house to fun things to do around town were provided by the host, making this experience absolutely perfect for myself and my friends.

A very nice and cozy place to stay

The property was lovely for the most part. It was warm and cozy and spacious. The upstairs shower was not working properly. We reported it. Luckily there was a downstairs shower we could use. It would have been rough if a big group was there. We only had two people for our stay. Also, there was no dishwasher soap. And it would have been nice to have some measuring utensils. There wasn’t even a measuring cup. Aside from the shower issue, nothing else was a major problem. Overall, I would definitely stay there again. The pluses definitely outweighed any minuses. The view was spectacular! The one and only time we saw the northern lights was from the house. The downstairs family room was huge and a really nice touch. We spent a lot of time there. It had big windows to see the view as well.

House with uninterrupted super sea side views

Property has a rather unusual layout with the lounge in the basement. This means the best views are always from the Kitchen on the first floor. The only downside is there is a new property being built next door. This was not a problem during our stay but as it grows I suspect the noise will become increasingly intrusive during the day.

The most relaxing time one can have

Honestly, this place is a remarkable gem, in an adorable town, set in an unforgettable region of Iceland. We LOVED every second here and coming back to this house after a day of exploring felt calming. Bring groceries, have a seat in the hot pot, enjoy the view from a bunk bed, stay a while!!!

Wonderful Location-Great House

The house sits right on the water and is surrounded by mountains. It was clean but there was an odor in the house. The rooms/beds were very nice. We had a bad storm and lost power for about 45 minutes but the host was available by phone and assured us it would be back on shortly.

Wonderful, quiet, beautiful view

Everything was wonderful… very clean, all the dishes we needed to cook in, plenty of room, even had a drying rack for items we didn’t want to dry all the way.. many sights to see within 1.5 hours driving, making it our perfect base to explore the north..

Ideal family base

Really great place to use as a vase to explore North Iceland , both locally and a bit more widely. House was everything we hoped for. My daughter spotted whales out in the bay but declined to tell anyone till the next day! So remind your group to tell everyone if they spot one! If you are really tall (I’m 200cm) mind your head on he beam downstairs!

Beauty and solitude

We were looking for a quiet place in a beautiful setting. This certainly fit the bill! The rooms were full of light and the view can't be beat. There is a small store that is adequate for most things and an amazing (pleasantly warm) swimming pool with hot pools--not unusual in Iceland but not something common in the USA. We totally enjoyed our time there.

March ski trip

Great location to explore Kaldbakur and the surrounding mountains. Beautiful house with plenty of space and the sunset over the fjord from the hot pot is top notch. Only area of improvement would be a few more essentials in the kitchen and soap/shampoo for the showers.

Large, comfortable, beautiful view

This flat is in an out-of-the way place north of Akureyri, on the water, with gorgeous views. Akureyri and its markets are 30 min away, so please plan your food accordingly. There is one small market just two blocks away (walking distance) but it closes around 5 or 6, so once it's closed, food is far enough away to become a hassle. The house itself is very comfortable and well-equipped, with a large dining table and great kitchen. Because the house is all brick, there is no wifi downstairs in the living room, which may cause challenges with those who want to stream entertainment there. The wifi signal is fine upstairs in the dining/bedroom area (maybe this is an area the owner could fix, but let's be honest, we're not going here to watch TV!). The location is great, it's definitely super-quiet, even though the area is lived-in and you see neighbors going about their business in their beautiful houses. One awkward thing was that to dispose of the trash, the only place the owner has for this house is on his other property about 10 minute drive away. The rest of the checkout list was also a little bit involved, with some things on there I would have expected to be done by the cleaning people rather than me. Nothing major, but on the list was to strip the bed, adjust thermostats, take the sorted trash out 10 min away... I don't want to sound whiny, but with 200 euro linen & cleaning fees, this felt excessive. Ultimately, this is a nice place, and can be a comfortable out-of-the-way stay in northern Iceland.
