This waterfront cottage is a good place to unplug. Yes, there’s internet*, but the main attraction is the expansive water views to the West. The property is ten acres and includes a small bay, where you can sit and watch the seals, eagles, otters, herons, and if you’re lucky, the whales.
This 770 square foot cabin was designed by a local architect with simplicity in mind. The bath and bedrooms are modest in size, but your tub and upstairs bed include a view of the ocean. Appliances are similarly simple: glass-top range/oven and an under-counter fridge with room for essentials. The house uses a wood burning stove for heat, supplemented by a couple electric radiators. The cabin has an open floor plan and vaulted ceiling, so if you come with friends (sleeps 4 guests max), it will be an opportunity to get to know them better. The washer and dryer are located in a small outbuilding, not in the main house.
Please note, your pets will have to stay at home, and this rental is not suitable for children under 12 due to steep drop-offs and a spiral staircase.
There is a small propane barbecue on the deck and a picnic table in the yard from which you can see the lighthouse on San Juan Island. Very steep stairs lead down to the pebble beach. If sunsets are your thing, you’ve found the right place.
As for nearby attractions, Shark Reef Sanctuary is a 10 minute walk down the road. And, you’re only a short drive from some great short hikes, including Iceberg Point, Watmough Bay, and Spencer Spit. Lopez Village offers a farmer’s market on summer weekends, and excellent food and cocktail options are abundant, whether you’re looking for a burger and beer or all-local, farm-to-table cuisine. If you enjoy bicycling, definitely come equipped (or rent locally); Lopez offers miles of low-angle riding through farmland and forests with few cars and many secret spots to discover.
Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions, so we can be sure the experience matches your expectations. This not just a rental property, it’s our home, so treating it as you would your own home is much appreciated!
SPECIAL NOTES:
• *Internet speeds, bandwidth and reliability in the San Juan Islands currently lag behind the mainland. If you wish to use videoconferencing, streaming services, or multiple simultaneous internet connections, please know that performance may not meet the levels you’re accustomed to. You may need to alter your online work and entertainment plans due to service fluctuations or outages.
• No outdoor fires are allowed anywhere on the property due to fire danger and prohibition by County regulation. And, please don’t try to roast marshmallows in the woodstove.
• No smoking or vaping allowed. Please use your legal intoxicants of choice responsibly and know that you are doing so at your own risk. Again, there’s a drop-off with rocks at the bottom and the stairs are steep: it’s not a safe place to be impaired.
• There is a $150 cleaning fee on all rentals.
