Disappointing

Unwelcoming front desk, depressing bedroom - my daughter had a single bed in a windowless room - quite unlike photos on the website, claustrophobic bathroom, unpleasant smell to the room's entrance. Hope to never go back.

Nightmare

Constantly awoken in the middle of the night by the owner and staff members shouting and arguing outside room. Apparently staff member had thrown cutlery in the bin and there was a huge argument with shouting. Next night around midnight owner was at it again, this time calling his dog in. After this more raised voices between staff!

You can do better than this

Do not stay in the annex. It has a damp and musty smell - most unpleasant. It is an old building but this is unacceptable. They told me that no one has mentioned it before but I see (belatedly) it has been mentioned in other reviews. After complaining twice, they did move me for the second night to a better room and only partially refunded me for the third night when they could not accommodate me in a different room. Save yourself the grief and stay at Dukeries.

This was a family stay and this hotel was very convenient for us all. Although Quirky the rooms were spotless and adequate. The food was also excellent, with a great choice for breakfast and dinner, and all the staff were really friendly.

The redeeming factor of this old property is the Staff. They quite simply work their sock of to make your stay bearable, problem is the place is stuck in a time warp and needs drastic remedial action. The photos on site look marvellous, but in reality the place is run down. Food is of a very reasonable quality and the drinks selection are very good, but I like comfort not quirky.

We really enjoyed staying at forest lodge. We were made to feel very welcome and relaxed in the bar area. Staff were welcoming and kind and friendly. A lady gave us a free bottle of Prosecco to help us celebrate our anniversary. Sitting in the bar having a meal and a drink was one of my highlights on our break. Some of the hotels main procedures cause them a bit of difficulty. For instance asking everyone for photo ID at check in- if this needs to be done it could be done at booking. Also taking £50 on hold from every guest as this often isn’t returned very quickly and I heard many guests complaining about this amongst themselves. I still haven’t received my refund either. Parts of Forest lodge need redecoration, maintenance and love. The indoor areas are not just old but tarnished and in need of redecoration. The biggest problem we encountered was the awful smell as you walk through the lodge and into the annex- the annex smells appallingly of mould. I don’t think that can be healthy. It’s up to an intolerable level. Our room- room number 6- was in the annex and it was quite hard to tolerate that stench. As we walked through on the day of departure and saw all the rooms being cleaned room 6 is probably one of the smallest and less comfy rooms also. It isn’t cheap to stay at forest lodge so their prices need to respect the experience the guest receives. We did enjoy our stay (mention to the lovely dog!) and we would come back, but there is no way we would stay in the annex.

Lovely welcome on arrival the staff were always to hand and looked after all our needs. Tasty breakfast well cooked and plentiful. Comfortable bed and despite being in a room facing the road we weren't disturbed and had an excellent nights sleep. Comfy bar and tasty bar meals.

This is really awful. It had musty smelling carpeting which they tried to cover up with terrible strong cleaners. (Think swimming pool chlorine plus moldy rag.) The combination was sickening so I couldn't stay but they wouldn't give even a partial refund. Lesson learned. Patrons beware this is the ultimate tourist trap. I would've rather slept in Sherwood Forest! Sherwood Forest is definitely worth the trip but avoid staying here.

I had one complaint & that was there was dog mess in the car park far corner which was obviously old & some had been trodden in. Otherwise the room was clean, quite spacious & plenty of tea & coffee. The bathroom was clean & tidy with plenty of fresh towels. The breakfast was delicious & the staff were extremely friendly.

Quirky pub with lots of different little areas of seating. Nice big car park and small outdoor seating area. Lots to do in the area. Just needs more staff, every time we wanted a drink or to order food we had to go looking for staff. Cooked breakfast was on the small side for portion and quite a long wait both to order and food to arrive. Evening staff were very friendly and bar meals good value. Room was a little noisy from bar below until closing time. Bed was comfy and room well equipped.

Good

A small, homely hotel near Sherwood Forest. Comfortable rooms, very clean. A great bar with delicious and high-quality dishes and dinner at reasonable prices. A baby cot is provided upon request of very good quality. I was a little upset when the staff discussed political issues with the guests at the breakfast. Several nationalities were called stupid and inadequate, which is generally unacceptable for the service sector. Breakfast could have been better. There is no one at the reception all the time.

Nothing horrible to report. Good veggie options at the pub for dinner. The complimentary breakfast was as expected. The room was just a cramped room as advertised. The chairs were foot stools so working or eating at the fold out desk was awkward. Not bad overall just not a five star.

Terrible - where do I start….

Arrived 55 mins early for check in and was abruptly told if we wanted to check in now then we’d have to pay an early check in fee we came back later to which the guy doing the check in was so rude to the guy in front of us. You need to have physical ID on you so they can copy it and then secure £50 against your credit card but they don’t take contactless either. To get the rooms are really steep stairs and then the room (which we was told was the best there) was diabolical, the walls were pealing, wires everywhere and pealing wallpaper. You could feel all the springs in the matress and the quilt was thin and only just fitted the bed Then went to have a shower and it goes from boiling hot to absolutely freezing cold there was no way you can shower properly there nor would you be able to put a child in there. Was talked into breakfast at check in which is £10.50 for 1 bit of dried bacon, 1 egg, 1 sausage, a tub of beans a tomato and some mushrooms. I wish we went to the local cafe instead.
