Holidays in Never

Sick of being an armchair traveller? Dying to experience the real thing? Never is the perfect place to start. You'll find it among the dazzling forests, rivers and streams of Amur Oblast. (You might have to sidestep the well-trodden tourist trail, but that's what travelling is all about, right?)

It's situated 5,200 kilometres to the southeast of Moscow, the capital of Russia.

If you've got ample time, why not go to some close-by places? Kovali and Skovorodino are 15 kilometres and 15 kilometres away, respectively.

Experience the countryside from a different angle and get involved in some mountain climbing or hiking. They're both well-liked pastimes around these parts.

A few hours in the great outdoors can quieten the mind. If you're feeling a little fatigued, why not take a breather by going cycling or shore fishing?

Looking for some fun off terra firma? Amur Oblast is a wonderful area to dive into some canoeing and boating. They're must-do pastimes, even for landlubbers!

Explore the region's art museums, history museums, art galleries and theatres. They are particularly good places to seek refuge in when the rain starts bucketing down.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better way to learn about the local area than by visiting its open-air museums, open-air exhibits and gardens.

Journey back into the past with an outing to the region's ruins, old towns and archeological sites. When it comes to understanding the historical significance of these structures, a well-informed tour guide can make all the difference.

See how religion plays an important role in the lives of the people who call Never home by exploring some of the local churches, cathedrals and monasteries.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once said, but throw travel into the mix and it's a match made in heaven. You're invited to combine your two loves by eating and drinking your way across Amur Oblast.

Once you find a table and thumb through a menu at a restaurant, you'll see that rye and oats are a couple of ingredients commonly used in the local cuisine.

You probably won't need too much persuading to have a bite of lymonnyk (lemon pie), a dessert that'll make you want to sever all ties and settle down here forever.

If you truly want to see the big pitcher, take the hopportunity to gulp down a beer. Schooner rather than later! Dreadful beer puns aside, don't forget to sample Baltika Premium Lager, one of the top local brews.

Knowing how to say a couple of expressions in the local language will make your time in the Amur Oblast region that little bit less challenging. You may be glad you learnt 'A ty?', which means 'fine thanks, and you?'. There's also 'Očen' prijatno' ('pleased to meet you').

There's bound to be an air of fever and excitement around the 12th of June. The locals will be making preparations for Russia Day, a day of national celebrations.

"Poka!" doesn't need to sound so final. Why not put away a few Russian rubles for your next holiday here?

From the middle of Never, it's approximately 450 kilometres southeast to Blagoveschensk Airport (BQS). This is the nearest airport. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to find your way there so you don't miss your plane!
