Not up to Novotel standards

First impression was negative since we had no help with our luggage (dragged from street), and the front desk lady spoke English poorly. We had booked a suite hoping that if I snored the sofa bed would give some space. But the "pull-out bed" was a chair pull-out that was almost touching the bed, so it would not only be no help but was in the way. The suite had more square footage than a standard room, but was laid out very poorly. We immediately asked to change to a standard room (mainly because my wife uses a cane, and the suite was a VERY long walk to the very end of the hall). We changed to a standard room, but the hotel refused to credit us with the price difference. Other negatives: Nothing in mini-bar; Our bathroom was cramped and a bad layout; Only instant coffee in the room; The roof-top terrace was only open for breakfast & dinner (with reservation); They closed the restaurant one evening (for an event) with no notice to guests; The bar times were very limited, and the bartenders could not make many standard drinks (e.g. Martini); The neighborhood around was lousy. We got in an elevator one day to almost step on large shards of glass from a broken wine glass on the floor. When we told the front desk they said "Oh we know, and intend to clean it"! But the elevator was still in operation! OK, there was one positive: the breakfast was excellent. Other Novotel hotels (e.g. Barcelona) have been much better. This hotel seems to only serve the convention nearby.

I loved my stay at Novotel. The hotel has a contemporary, sleek design and the rooms have a minimalist luxury with many elegant and functional touches. The best part was the service of the staff who were so helpful, accommodating, flexible, and friendly. They were fluent in English and also spoke French with me when I tried without any of the snobbery you might experience elsewhere in Paris. They were accommodating about keeping my bags securely before and after check-in so that I could make the most of my travel days. The director of the hotel was amazing and brought my luggage out to my rental car when I pulled up to go on a trip to Normandy. He told me about the place where he grew up close to my destination, and was exquisitely polite, personable, and professional. I would definitely stay at Novotel again. If you book in advance, you can get a great value, too!
