Amazing place. We had room 10 which I had seen some people moaning about in reviews as has no window, was dark with no ventilation and had a funny smell. Let me tell you that room 10 is great!!! Yes no window but doors have shutters which allow plenty of light and air in. Granted the wardrobe was a bit musty however nothing a bit of airing didn’t sort. If you want to stay at the Ritz, then book the Ritz, however if you want to stay at a beautiful French shabby chic cosy and tranquil hotel then this is for you!!! Cannot recommend highly enough!!!!!!!

( ) Authentically French; helpful staff
(-) No lifts, and steep-ish narrow stairs to upstairs bedrooms; inconvenient parking
The staff were so lovely. Everything was so clean and it was so peaceful there. The garden is lovely and the breakfasts were yummy.

Perfect location and charming hotel. Honestly think it’s 3 stars make it underrated! The pictures don’t do it justice. The staff we’re really attentive but never invasive. I’d go back
Wonderfull hotel and staff. I've stayed here twice and everything was perfect every time. It's in an ideal location walking distance to everything, the breakfast is delicious and the rooms are very charming :).
It was very disappointing having read such great reviews. I think we were in an older room….. toilet was like a black room! Black painted walls trying to hide pipes and poor wall condition. Holes in the floor where pipes come through. Bed head was old rusted shutters…..probably vintage but…… poor pillows and uncomfortable bed. Our paid parking had been double booked due to a clerical error. Location was fantastic and staff very nice. First time we’re stayed with a hotel.com place and felt so let down. It was not a cheap stay either! We’re well aware island life is not cheap as we live on one!
Quirky hotel, lovely staff, location great (in the middle of St Martin). It was an adventure finding it through the narrow cobbled streets and then had to park 1/2 mile away - fun though. Lovely courtyard ideal for an aperitif
Would definitely recommend. Staff couldn't have been more helpful
This was our third stay at La Maison Douce and - as on the previous visits - everything was perfect. The service was friendly and prompt, the rooms clean and tidy.
Highly recommended!
Ile de Ré is a beautiful place to visit. Saint-Martin-de-Ré is so quaint and beautiful! The Maison Douce is nice, with a friendly staff and lots of lounges where you can read, visit, and have breakfast. The room we had was very nice, although not spacious. The location is within a minute's walk of the port with all its restaurants, boutiques, and the market (marché) -- not to be missed!
The Wifi worked, but might prove difficult to connect to f you are not patient or not computer-savvy.
Located in the old town of St Martin it’s only a short stroll to the picturesque harbour, great restaurants and bars and some high end shopping. The pace of the town in October was very relaxed. Other small towns on Isle de Re are easily accessible by bike along safe flat bike paths. Staff at the hotel were extremely helpful in suggesting places to eat and visit. Both receptionists spoke excellent English.
If arriving by train to La Rochelleits it’s possible to get a bus to St Martin but it’s a bit of a hike over cobbles to the hotel. Better to let the hotel arrange a taxi for you at La Rochelle station (approx 50 euros). Taxi drivers at the station taxi stand appeared a bit reluctant to make the trip.
Lovely hotel, I would however note that it’s not really equipped to deal with young children. Lots of status to the family room we stayed in and open staircase out of the room which was a hazard for our 2 year old twins! Friendly staff, lovely setting

Liked: Cleanliness
Disliked: Room comfort
Cramped, noisy and uncomfortable room. Good breakfast and pleasant garden.
The hotel was very pretty and close to the centre of St Martin and the port. Superb for getting around and a lovely peaceful house. Only negative was the darkness of our bedroom, room 11. More lighting needed even with the curtains fully drawn on a sunny day. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely return.
The hotel is very charming with a lovely garden to boot.
It offers a delicious breakfast with all the French goodies
The rooms are sparse but fine. The lesser attractive part is the bed and matlass. The bed is quite low to the ground, the matlass quite hard.
Nevertheless I would go back again for the location is superbe.

Lovely but needs improvement
This is a lovely hotel but it is lacking in ambience and polish given the price tag. Lovely staff and garden. Room was very clean. Things that need improvement - dreadful wifi, cheap linen, terrible terrible lighting in the rooms - no ceiling lights only lamps so really difficult to actually see as the decor is grey and nasty instant coffee only in the room. A few easy things like an honesty bar, a cosy reception room and a nespresso machine in the cosy reception room would make this hotel a stand out.
