We had a most enjoyable first stay at South Sands having had to change our plans at short notice due to an injury which meant that my husband was unable to fly. As we arrived to check-in Jonathan the food and beverages manager gave us the warmest of welcomes, he presides over an excellent team. The menu was extensive and varied using the delicious fresh local fish and seafood to its full advantage, the lobster bisque amongst other dishes is to be highly recommended. The beach view room was well appointed, fresh milk to make hot beverages along with local biscuits and complimentary water was a lovely touch. We were a little surprised when we requested a second cappuccino at breakfast to be told that this incurs an extra charge after discussion with the general manager it was explained this is during the summer season. Having never encountered such a policy in many other hotels both in the UK and overseas we felt it was perhaps a short sighted policy from the point of view of guest satisfaction when so much else at the hotel is to be commended including the very friendly staff.

All the staff were so friendly and helpful, the room was great, I didn't fully understand the heating and ventilation but that was down to me. the beach view from the dining room was excellent and the local walks in and around South Sands were great. All the meals we had were 1st class especially breakfast We Walked to Salcombe a couple of times and although its a little hilly the views made up for it. We only had a three day stay but the time passed in the blink of an eye. This was a really great stay for myself and my wife and we will return.

A ground-floor room with a 'balcony' with a partial view of the beach, but quite acceptable. Clean and tidy, but mattress too firm. The hotel was overrun by dogs which were apparently given free reign in the restaurant. We were left wondering if the serving staff washed their hands after petting the animals before serving the next dish. If we had realised just how 'dog friendly' this hotel was, we would not have booked. . Staff very friendly and helpful.

This was our first stay at this hotel, the location was lovely and extremely close to the sandy beach. Our room was comfortable with a sea view and the food was excellent, including a family celebration lunch there. It also has access to a nearby sea ferry, and connecting tractor, which takes you to nearby Salcombe. The hotel has its own car park which was really helpful.

Great bank holiday stay

The staff were so personable and helpful from reception, restaurant staff to the lovely cleaning lady😀 Breakfast was really good, with fresh coffee, unlike other hotels where it’s self service from a machine! Great dinners with freshly caught fish specials. Our room was excellent, clean and spacious. Thank you South Sands Hotel-we will be back !

A warm welcome after our long journey, which relaxes you straight away. We were shown our room, and it met our needs. We celebrated our Wedding Anniversary over this time, and found the staff very approachable, with the Breakfast having a good choice overlooking the beach. Ample secure carparking facility next too the hotel. The facilities in the hotel/ room, met our needs. We would recommend to others, and hope to return in the not too distant future.

This hotel is lovely, the parking is safe, the build and furnishings are of excellent quality. However, our room had a terrible small of drains/sewage. It also looked onto the bins. Our issue was not with the hotel or the room but with the duty manager and her unprofessional and quite honestly, insulting way she dealt with us and our complaint. We met other patrons who had been visiting SouthSands Hotel for many years and they too were massively disappointed by the attitude of staff, in particular but not exclusively, the duty Manager, who was down right rude and singularly unhelpful to them too, It's safe to say that we will not be revisiting this Hotel. Thankfully we managed to book a room at the Harbour Hotel which was a happy ending to our otherwise unhappy special break. Some serious customer service training is very much needed at this hotel.
