We had a lovely stay at Mata e' Platano Guesthouse. The property was very quiet and peaceful. If you want to feel close to nature, this is the place for you. We fell asleep to the sound of the cocqui and woke up to roosters and birdsong. The facilities were clean and tidy. The room was a little humid and we saw a handful of mosquitos, but thats expected in the rainforest climate. The staff were friendly and incredibly helpful and accommodating whenever we had a request or concern. We didn't like that the shower in the bathroom didn't have a curtain. It also would have been nice if the patio doors had screens so we could get fresh air without letting bugs in. But overall, they did a lot to make a bunch of shipping containers into a comfortable and unique place to stay!

Disliked: Room comfort
TINY + BAD VENTILATION + BAD POSITIONING OF AC
TINY space with no ventilation in room or bathroom other than windows with NO SCREENS. We found multiple mosquitoes and spiders on arrival because the balcony was left open slightly. When we closed the windows, it was so humid and uncomfortable. We had to have the A/C blasting to help with the humidity, but the bed was positioned right under it, so our HEADS had to deal with direct COLD AIR BLASTING.
The property is a unique experience within Luquillo. The property and amenities are excellent. Travelers be warned that if you are not renting a vehicle, you will face long wait times for Ubers as the property is not walkable into town. Otherwise, if you do have transportation, this property is a hidden gem and would recommend.
The advertisement for this property is very deceiving. Did not realize it was an Airbnb. Very secluded with limited to no transportation. Remote area did not allow for reasonable phone reception. Very disappointed!
This property was cute and had exactly what we needed for the night. I love that we could hear the coquis from our room as we fell asleep and the pool at night was beautiful all lit up! Close enough to our favorite bakery Luquillo and easy check in! Would do it again!
I stayed at this location for 4 days. It was super quiet so I enjoyed the sounds of the coqui every night. Im so exited that suites will be available soon since the rooms were too small for me. There were no big mirrors and overall too small for us.
The pictures of the property are somewhat deceiving. There is NO real breakfast here. There is coffee, some crackers, stale bread, some peanut butter. That’s it. Maybe some fruit.
If you are still determined to stay here make sure to pack lightly because the rooms are tiny and cramped with all of the furnishings shown in the photos, photos which were clearly staged to make the rooms appear larger.
Hubby and I stayed 2 nights in room #1.
Room itself is very small. We are not large people and are very minimalist, but this room was beyond that. One small aisle to walk through, one person had to crawl into bed via the end bc the bed is rammed against the wall.
There is only one window and it's the big patio doors at the end of the bed. No screen, so we could not sleep with windows open.
Air conditioner worked great but it's right across from the bed on the wall and I woke up with a cold and sore throat due to it blowing on me all night.
Bathroom: it's huge, which I don't care about bc I don't spend a lot of time in there. Half of the room is the open shower, which had no place to set shampoo bottles, etc. those are set on the sink vanity so you walk over there dripping wet and get the rest of the area around the vanity wet. The bathroom door is just a slatted wood door so if you like to hear all if your partners bathroom sounds, this room is for you.
Now to the worst part of the room: the entrance door is frosted glass, letting the two blaring lights from the back hallway shine directly into the room it was bright as day in there all night! Eye masks were provided and we used them but I don't like to and not everyone does. We would have hung some towels over the door but there was no place to clip them.
Room #1 also has a leaky pipe right over the door so we got water drips on our heads every time we stepped out. And it dropped on room floor when door was open.
What worked: SPACE: The shipping container housing was unique, snug in size and very clean. You have a balcony to hang out or dry items. AMBIANCE: The property is very quiet and peaceful. AMENITIES: There is A/C. You have a mini fridge and anything kitchen-related including a microwave is in the breakfast room. There is a pool that gets cleaned from time to time. It's cute at night, with the occasional bugs there. There are lounge chairs in the front of the property.
GOAL: The idea of staying here is to unplug from the world, read a book, stay in the rainforest, listen to nature, dip in the pool and relax. The property is mainly quiet with just guests and of course no front desk, this is a self-check in property where they send you instructions on how to enter the property and your room. They should put on the instructions precise information for those taking a cab from SJU. *Be sure to tell the driver Mata e Platano GUESTHOUSE or else you will be dropped off in the neighborhood up the hill by 5 minutes because of Google Map.
What didn't work: Mosquitoes will be in your room. This is the rainforest not the city, so just remember that. They do offer bug spray and candles in the breakfast room!
Areas of improvement: It seemed like false advertising to have photos of yoga and massages on these websites. Unclear on how to book or if they actually offered these services. Include clear instructions for guests to tell drivers how to get to guesthouse from outside Luquillo.
Vieques Puerto Rico is BEAUTIFUL and I am so happy we stayed at El Blok. It was our first time visiting the island, so the advice and help the staff gave was very appreciated. Everyone on the island are laid back and ready to help as well. The location across from the beach is a short walk to Sun Bay Beach! Gorgeous! There's a restaurant conveniently placed at El Blok-the food was really good and other places nearby to eat. Across the street and in the area there are UTV rentals, making it easier to get around to explore the island. I had better cell service in Vieques vs. the mainland and there were no problems with WiFi at the hotel. Besides all the amenities the hotel is clean and smells so pretty. They have a beautiful set up in the room I stayed. We hope to return someday soon!
This property is so beautiful and quaint! It’s close to the El Yunque, and beautiful beaches. It is well maintained and clean. The robes are a great bonus! Instructions for check in and out were well explained and easy. It really is a beautiful place to stay at a great price, the rooms are smaller but have everything you need. We appreciated this as we were gone most of the day doing activities. The room information recommend a restaurant called Lolitas.. it was so good!! Our only suggestions would be more blankets in the room. The bed only included a flat sheet and a throw blanket. It was quite chilly at night. In addition, the bathrooms/unit needs an exhaust fan to help with the dampness. Over all 10/10, we cannot wait to come back!! Thank you!
