The Avery 12 on North Shore

The Sommerhaus is a complex of 3 cottages situated on one property [see profile for all listings] perfect for individual stays or family gatherings. Each cottage has its own unique name & feel. This listing is for The Avery – a 1920’s clapboard cottage inspired by Scandinavian coastal design. 1-minute walk to Oak Street beach and a 15-minute walk (2-minute drive) to downtown South Haven. The space was fully renovated winter of 2022 with the Scandi-Rustic mentality of creating a warm and cozy atmosphere to be enjoyed with friends & family. While updated and modernized, the cottage maintains its rustic 1920s beachside character. Utilizing natural materials and vintage finds, the space has a relaxed, airy vibe. There are two bedrooms - one queen and the other with 1 twin (+ trundle). The beds are super comfortable with premium mattresses, crisp cotton sheets, organic cotton duvets and vintage finds. The kitchen is equipped with a four-burner stove, oven, full-size fridge/freezer, farmhouse sink, coffee maker, and all the essentials (plus some extras) to prepare and enjoy a home-cooked meal. This cottage comes with a brick patio which includes dining for 6, and a gas grill. Parking for 1 vehicle is available. Please park in your dedicated lane which will be marked with a parking sign. We hope you fully enjoy your stay while being respectful to the neighbors and guests in nearby cottages.

Disliked: Cleanliness
We've stayed at many properties in South Haven over the years, and unfortunately, this was the most disappointing experience to date. Upon arrival, we found the exterior windows covered in cobwebs, dead bugs, and debris. Half the windows were missing screens entirely. Though we contacted Cody from Lakeview, his response was that they’d just picked up the property and were “working on getting it up to par.” If it’s not ready, it shouldn’t be rented. Things got worse when we noticed an ant infestation in the kitchen—crawling on the microwave, stove, walls, and even our food. Cody dismissed it, saying ants were “bad this year” and he had them at home too. There’s no excuse for not treating a known pest issue. Other issues: Wi-Fi was spotty or nonexistent, beach gear was broken, and the house lacked basic essentials like extra trash bags or salt and pepper. Photos online make the home appear much cleaner and more polished than it is.
