WARNING: Serious Security Issue!
We encountered a serious security issue with this property.
We entered the password provided for the room that was assigned to us. However, the door did not open. Then we noticed that part of the password we were given resembled (but did not match) the our apartment room number. So we modified the password to align with the room number and were able to enter the room. However, we found that the room was already occupied! We surmised that the property manager had originally provided a valid password, but wrong room number. We could easily determine the correct room number as it was contained in the password, and were able to enter our assigned room.
We then requested the property manager to immediately change our password as a room password that contains the number of the room is too easy guess and therefore dangerously insecure. We also suggested that all the passwords in the complex be changed to random strings. He said he would change it the next day, which I replied was not acceptable. He then provided instructions to directly change the password, which we did. We also informed our neighbors, whose room we unintentionally opened, about the issue and gave then instructions to reprogram their password.
This was a serious failure of both VBRO and the property manager. VBRO needs to educate and ensure that property managers properly manage the security of the properties they rent.
