Original room in extremely poor condition carpet full of bad stains walls badly marked and window would not open. 2nd room also in very poor condition and noisy. Breakfast not up to a 4 star hotel. Have visited the hotel on occasions since 1973 but will not return again.

We had a wonderful stay at The Grand Hotel, we had our 11 month old puppy with us too. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We would like to make a special mention to the restaurant staff as we had dinner on Saturday evening in the dog friendly part of the bar and were well looked after. Thank you once again for making our stay so enjoyable.

A very cursory stop

A very brief stay - arrived in time to drop bags, then straight off to Theatre. Head down overnight, quick shower and back out at 8am for train back to London. Total time spent from check-in to check out 11hrs 37 mins - actually in hotel approx 8 hours. Not long enough for real assessment of facilities. Room clean, bed comfortably. Near station. Suited our needs.

We are frequent visitors to the Grand,and it has not changed much over the years We always think that a great saving could be made by the owners if the daytime heating was turned down. The rooms are stifling, you could grow tropical plants in the bedrooms.

The hotel is in a great location next to the train station and only a short work in to town. The room was clean and tidy and the bed was very comfy and we had a great nights sleep.

They need to advise that compact rooms are a distance from the lift. Room view was a concrete wall with no view of the sky. Reception staff were not very friendly. Breakfast was not available to order before 10 am in the bar not even a pot a tea even though the menu states breakfast can be order from 9.30. Dinner in the restaurant was nice. But they had run out of the ice cream for the dessert we wanted-which happens but the alternative did not complement the dessert. Overall we had a great time despite the decline of the grand hotel.

The place feels a bit shabby in parts, especially the swimming pool area, but the staff are awesome and the sea view rooms are worth the upgrade. The place is ideal if you're arriving by train as it's right next door!

Two messages sent via Expedia in advance of stay, no response. Message sent again through online check in, still no response. First room stunk of damp carpet. Moved to second room, which was marginally better, didn't smell. Air vent in bathroom disgustingly dirty. No welcome pack in the room. No fridge in the room. Stale biscuits in the room. Currently undergoing renovations so scaffolding up and banging so a bit noisy. Notification of indoor swimming pool and gym closure after booking, but too late to cancel. No compensation or response to messages about our disappointment about this, despite we know they got our messages as they knew we were no longer bringing our dog. Bar staff seemed very confused about simple orders and housekeeping removed personal item (albeit accidentally, but we only got half back, with no compensation). Hotel was fine for a couple of nights, but wouldn't go back. Staff try and be helpful, but fall short of good customer service.

All fine for a one night stay. Little things like staff not cleaning up drink spills or even apologies for spilling the drinks! Other staff extremely attentive & almost overly apologetic about minor things…! Restaurant - as a group of 6 we had to wait for all 6 to receive both their starters & then their main courses… after a few minutes it became awkward. Even having bottles of prosecco opened & glasses provided was a ‘waiting game’ … should we open them or is he going to come back & do it…?! Pool & changing rooms require some considerable maintenance as do other areas … obvious work in places like the bar area … not sure if things like rolled up bits of carpet needs to be left in the public areas? Otherwise, as said for one night it was good.
