Didn’t use the spa as it was booked up!! Hotel room was far too hot. Reported but nothing done!! Charged nearly £8 service charge for a tea and a coffee absolutely daylight robbery. Don’t bother with this hotel. It’s not worth it.

Beautiful hotel & grounds. Warm welcome when checking in & very fast efficient pleasant checking out. Rooms very clean & excellent maintenance service. Our only criticism, sadly was the running of the restaurant. We found it lacked atmosphere, & the breakfast service was very poor. We waited 30 minutes to ask what hot drinks we would like. The food was good but the service is poor

Reception staff were professional and friendly. The room was big and clean though a bit dated. We were interrupted a couple of times in the morning but housekeeping wanting to come in. We couldn't find a 'do not disturb' sign for the door, if there is on in the room it needs to be somewhere more noticeable (like on the door!). Breakfast was ok though we would have expected more for the price. Breakfast staff were very friendly and attentive. The communal area by the bar is small. The pool was nice however the changing rooms needed a good clean and we were surprised by the 1 hour limited especially since we were the only people in the pool. Overall, it wasn't a bad stay, we just had higher expectations for the amount of money charged.

Unmet expectations

The hotel grounds and main building is lovely. Our expectations were high considering the reviews we read and the rate paid. The spa treatments were fantastic, as was the spa itself with the swimming pool and sauna and steam room. Including the outside sauna, which was very nice. Everything else was pretty average thou. Breakfast was very average. It's not particularly bad, but it's also not a standout. Sencha restaurant similarly average and felt a bit pricey. Amazing restaurant/pub nearby - Windmill - more than compensated for it. On the negative side, the sound proofing of our room was virtually not existent. Combined with the very loud bathroom fan, it makes it very hard to have a very relaxing night. We can understand that as an old building, it will never be perfect, but the neighbours' loud TV sound and conversation and steps passed through in full volume. Even when the reception staff addressed it - promptly when reported - and the volume was definitely down, we could still hear it. Potentially this is not an issue in the newer built spa building which also has rooms.
