I’ve stayed at this property regularly on trips to Chicago over the last fifteen years. It has never been a disappointment, but it’s never been a life changer either. I’m pretty sure there hasn’t been any kind of renovation in that decade in a half. Certain parts of the property are showing their age. Sofitel concierges used to be top notch at all of their properties. But they provided a generally mediocre service on this trip. That’s not really the brands doing though, as demand has plummeted along younger generations, and training and education for hospitality positions has fallen even faster. But, from a guest’s point of view, if I’d been pleasantly surprised by the concierge meeting my needs, I’d have spent the last week telling all my friends and colleagues they needed to stay at the Sofitel the next time they’re in the city. Instead, Im writing this review,’publicly, and for total strangers. Just as the concierge recorded neither any wins nor any losses, and ultimately left me unfulfilled, so too did the rooms, the dining, and the property’s facilities. No complaints, but no praise either. The Chicago property is best compared to “preferred seating” on a mid tier carrier. Staying here is a definite upgrade from your basic economy seating, but if you had already been expecting first class, you’re going to be pretty disappointed.
