The Old Town is a bustling district filled with centuries-old buildings and narrow, winding alleys. At its centre, perched atop an extinct volcano, Edinburgh Castle houses Scotland’s Crown Jewels. The Royal Mile—a steep street lined with traditional pubs, casual eateries, souvenir shops, and small museums—stretches from the castle to the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s Scottish residence.
St Giles’ Cathedral impresses with its vaulted ceilings and ornate tombs, while the recently refurbished National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street showcases a rich collection of rare and priceless artifacts. Beneath the city, Edinburgh’s vaults offer a glimpse into a forgotten subterranean world that once sheltered the city’s poor.
The Old Town is captivating year-round, but it truly comes alive in August, when street performers fill the streets and the area bursts with the sights and sounds of the Edinburgh Fringe and Festival.
