It’s probably not the best place to try out your Scottish accent, but Edinburgh’s got loads of reasons why you should make it your next holiday escape. A modern city with medieval charm, the place even has its own actual castles (plural). There’s also the great public art installations, beautiful buildings and the decadent magic of deep-fried candy bars. No matter where your Edinburgh accommodation is located, you’ll be close enough to everything so that you don’t miss out on anything.
Steeped in history and culture, the Scottish capital doesn’t lack for activities or really ridiculously good-looking city views. A lot of the action takes place in Old Town and the upstart New Town. In Old Town, you’ll find Edinburgh Castle and St. Giles Cathedral. Take a stroll down the Royal Mile for a pedestrian’s view of local history. Laze away an arvo in the Meadows, reading, picnicking and planning out the rest of your Edinburgh holidays. On New Town’s Princes Street, the wealth of cool shops practically demand you buy a little something to remember your trip by. To the south you can trek through regional parks or stop by the Royal Observatory for a lesson in stargazing. To the west are even more photogenic castles, along with a stadium for sporting events and equally photogenic animals at the zoo.
The city delivers on moody, windswept ambience, which is probably why it has such a reputation as a literary hot spot. Try finding a better place to appreciate a good book while live-tweeting your genuine Scottish whisky (no “e” here) sampling before retiring to your room in one of many excellent Edinburgh hotels for the night.
Edinburgh International Airport serves travellers coming in and going out of the country. Flights to Edinburgh from Oz and back, usually with a couple stops in Asia and continental Europe, operate daily. Getting to the city centre from there is a snap with the Edinburgh Tramway. It runs every few minutes and tickets can be purchased from the machine before boarding. Bus service from the airport to the city is just as frequent and you get free Wi-Fi. If you want door-to-door transport, you can always hop into a public black cab or book a minicab ahead of time. Much of the city is very easily walkable. Though bus service is available here, too, you may want to rely on cabs or other vehicles if you need to get somewhere directly from one of our hotels in Edinburgh.
