Liked: Cleanliness
I chose this hotel because I wanted to be near the beach without spending a fortune. But I found out in reality I paid just as much as the people who are right by the beach in the nicer hotels. This is OK it’s a nice place but the neighborhood is a little dicey. It’s right at the edge of the good part of town and the bad part of town. In general, the closer you are to the ocean the better the neighborhood this is third Street and it’s a little bit out there and there are some pretty scary characters about. Do not go out after dark.
The room itself was fine but there’s a pool that no one swims in and they have the music going all day and for me listening to the Basco boom boom boom is a real turn off. They have a very nice restaurant there lots of young hip clientele. So the property itself is decent, but the neighborhood is a little scary and the building itself is kind of average. If you’re on the fence, I would kind of steer away from this so unless there’s no other option. It’s fine but a little far from the beach.
The room was spotless, cute decor. Comfy bed. We liked sitting in the courtyard by the pool having coffee in the morning. Nice landscaping. No parking on site, but with a little luck you figure out street parking.
We really enjoyed our stay at Sonder city center it was so close walking distance to whatever you wanted friendly staff clean comfortable room however don’t expect to have your room cleaned or trash collected unless you pay an additional fee for housekeeping
Surprise but really cool place to stay
The hoops you need to jump through at the beginning before being provided your code due to the “contactless stay” is super annoying. Upon our arrival, I was having issues with the app and had to keep finding my reservation number and re-logging in. There was a pleasant young woman at the desk who helped us. It also isn’t clear in the app that you can request an earlier check in time (4pm is pretty late IMO) so we stowed our belongings in a locker until 4pm. If no lockers had been available, I’m not sure what we would have done. The hotel set up and room itself was comfortable and the location is super walkable. Some of the front desk people weren’t very friendly at all and would barely look at you. The keypad on the outside of the building is very hard to see at night, and though someone at the desk could have just pushed the button to let us in, they didn’t on several occasions. We tried to eat at the restaurant on site but didn’t have reservations, so had a few things off the limited menu in the courtyard with lackluster service. We requested a later noon check out which was nice, but then they accidentally checked us out at 11 so had to let us back in to our room. We stayed 3 nights and for what I spent I’d expect way better customer service & would just prefer a regular check in process + interaction with people at the desk. Feels more like a wannabe Airbnb than a $300+/night hotel brand honestly. Not sure I’d stay again unless I didn’t have other options.
I stayed here while in town for a music festival. The room was cute, and very clean. A mini fridge would have been cool but I have no complaints about the room. Book a spot at a parking garage nearby in advance on Spot Hero. This saved me a lot of trouble. It was a quick walk for me.
My only qualm with this place was the customer service. I checked in around 4, the gentleman working the desk was not rude but also not very warm. He was also on what seemed like a meeting I could hear while I was checking in. Thought that was a bit unprofessional. I asked him which staircase was closest to my room (for obvious reasons! I have luggage)..and he responded with a tone like I was kind of an idiot for asking. “There’s stairs in each corner” okay great, I know that. that wasn’t what I asked. Another woman in the lobby thankfully told me which staircase.
I was in a hurry but wanted to grab a drink from the bar to take to my room while I got changed. I had my stuff still in my arms but it was literally just a large tote bag. The woman server in the restaurant looked at me like I didn’t belong there and approached me. I kindly asked if I was able to take a drink to the room from the bar, she looked somewhat appalled I asked this??? And once again looked me up and down with judgement in her face and told me in a very flat zero percent friendly way that I could but it would have to be in a plastic cup. Okay? That’s what I expected..
The bartender wasn’t really friendly at all either.
Overall great experience. Very clean room, comfy bed. Nice property, well kept. The only drawback no onsite parking provided. I would definitely stay here again.
Sonder is incredible value given its location and amenities. Centered just a few blocks from downtown Long Beach, Sonder includes fine dining helmed by a Michelin-star chef, lots of attractive outdoor seating, great room amenities -- very comfortable bed, lots of coffee pods, plenty of towels -- all for a price that makes it one of the cheapest hotels in the area!
The staff was so welcoming and friendly. They remember you and always wish you a good day.
I stayed here for the first time for 8 days between May and June, and I was so impressed. I will definitely be coming back when I return to Long Beach in September.
