Puerto Lopez is in a remote area of Ecuador that claims to be the "Poor Man's Galapagos". They are trying to develop this area as a tourist destination, and truthfully, we were disappointed. We were fortunate that the whale migration coincided with our vacation because that was the most spectacular site that we saw. We expected to see more wildlife on Isla de la Plata than the birds. We did see some sea turtles, but it is a stretch to compare it to visiting the Galapagos.
The hotel gave us their big room at the top of the stairs. We had a trickle of water for the toilet and shower. The tv didn't work, and the manager said he hadn't paid the cable bill. After 3 days of asking for water, we saw a truck pull up to fill their tanks. We paid more on our Expedia reservation than others who walked in without reservations. The breakfast that was included wasn't much: coffee, bread with jam, and juice. The hotel could have been cleaner. The pool is very small, and the water did not appear fresh and inviting.
