Mind your head!

The room was upstairs in the courtyard and as such had sloping ceilings and beams. For one person getting out of bed meant having to slide along to the end before getting out to avoid bumping your head. Peopke with limited agility should be aware. The bathroom was large and clean. There was a small window which didn’t really let much air in. Overall we were happy with what we paid and the castle itself is lovely.

Stunning building but tired rooms

Fabulous building and location - the hotel itself is a bit tired and in need of a refurb. Wifi not great but to be fair, he castle is 700 years old and has walls 8 feet thick so providing good wifi is tricky

Booked a double room for our first wedding anniversary, it took us over 4 hours to get there, we was given a very small room with very low ceiling, we couldn't get out of bed without hitting the ceiling beam, i felt claustrophobic, next day we asked for ground floor room but non was available, i asked for a upgrade they managed to find one but it cost me extra £90 which i thought it was to much, we went there for 4 nights it's already cost us near £400 now another £90, if they would have described the size of the room online i wouldn't have booked it, it was ment to be a special time for us, having to change room and pay extra made it not so special, i wouldn't return there again

Always come back!!

Everything from the staff friendliness, food to the cleanliness of the hotel is amazing! We have never had a bad stay here! We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at the restaurant. We also did the new castle tour which was 100% worth it!!

It seems silly to say that a castle is old fashioned, of course it is, but it is a bit like being in an old folks home; lots of rose pink velour arm chairs. Staff were great, the man at reception sorted out a couple of wrinkles for us, and breakfast wait staff were great. The breakfast is good; dining room is small because of the architecture so you need to pre-book a dining time. Our room, with four-poster, was the most expensive option but was very small, and while some people may say a basin and loo "hidden" in a wardrobe is amusing, others of us would say it's naff. Ditto the bath/shower in a corner of the bedroom, on a raised platform. Overall, a quirky stay, possibly lots of walking to get to your room but better to stay in the castle than the newer annexe. Approach with a sense of amusement.

Staying in the castle was an amazing experience. For those that expect modern facilities, please keep in mind that this is a very old castle that has been retrofitted. I would like a request special recognition to go to Stef and Lorraine, these ladies were warm, welcoming, and just all around wonderful!!! Please recognize them for their warm and generous style! Stef, please keep in touch! We had heard the castle was haunted and our friends traveling with us did experience some ghostly activity, I was jealous :-)

Coming from Australia a castle is a story book locale. To walk on Genuine flagstones was a real treat. The North is much more hospitable than London. I will be back.

A fantastic castle experience: it’s so much more interesting to stay in one than just looking. The staff were friendly and helpful and food was good too. There were a lot of stairs to negotiate to reach our top floor accommodation.

Always a unique and enjoyable experience. Wonderful staff. It is in need of some TLC in areas, but you have to consider it is 700+ yeas old - so you have to make allowances. If you want sterile this is not the place. Give me character every time.
