Our first time in an olde English castle. It was a real treat. We had a castle feature room with a large and very comfortable bed. The feature was a bathroom in the wardobe ( I kid ye not ) It was very clean and tidy. The floorboards creaked a bit but this is a castle built in 14C so we can excuse that. There was a heat wave when we arrived and the dark cool interior was very welcome. The library bar is cozy with very attentive staff. The Knight's restaurant was much bigger and the food was very well presented and tasty. Again, the staff were attentive without being overbearing. We got a nice wedding anniversary presentation after dessert which was a good touch. Breakfast was in the Knight's restaurant. The breakfast fixed menu was extensive and at £25 a pop a bit expensive too. However, a lot to choose from - you won't leave hungry and that's a fact! Again, very attentive staff. A couple of gripes, they are minor but nevertheless we couldn't understand it. 1st night we got a complimentary bottle of water each but no more after that. £2.50 for a cappaccino on top of a breakfast fixed price of £25 seemed a bit mean to me.Could do with a couple of hooks in the bathroom for removed clothes, hang the bathrobe while showering etc. These are all very minor points and didn't detract from the experience of staying in a real castle, with grand decor and a grand history, attentive and friendly staff, great grub too. Expensive but you get good bang for your buck.

A lovely hotel with a few surprises. The grounds were magnificent. We had a castle room which from a historical point of view was wonderful. The wardrobe was a bonus!

Unique as it was a castle, narrow passages and difficult at times to navigate your way around. Lift only goes to the first floor. There are lots of stairs if your room is on the top floor. It’s not for the more mature people if they are not fit. Bar area very well organized with excellent staff. Bedroom 56 very odd , shower and bath on a raised area in the corner of the bedroom! . Bar food ok but main restaurant limited choice, my lamb was very tasty but my wife had duck which she was unable to eat . The waitress did offer to take it back , Overall I would only give it 3 1/2 stars

The castle has lovely grounds. Not tourist frendly with luggage due to the tiny spiral staircases in the castle. Wouldn't recommend the extra money to stay in the castle. Stay in the court yard as it is much more friendly to load and unload luggage.

Lovely all round

Had 2 nights here in one of the standard courtyard rooms. However as it was in the eaves and we were in a heat wave it was so hot. Not the hotels fault though. Luckily there was a fan. Food in library bar was lovely, lovely grounds abs views and certainly got a wow factor driving in

Great Value for B&B. Convenient for Cricket.

Possibly because it was for Sunday & Monday nights, our 2-night stay was exceptional value. Very comfortable dormer-style room across the courtyard from the main castle (glad we missed last week's mini-heatwave or it would have been hot - although there was a big fan provided). Excellent breakfasts with interesting choices as well as full English. Friendly and efficient staff. We didn't eat in the main restaurant this time but we know it's good; we just didn't feel our appetites could do it justice and it is quite expensive - good for a celebration meal though. We ate in town Sunday night then in the hotel bar on Monday - the steak pie, mash & tenderstem broccoli was excellent.
