Holidays in Kerameikos

We all know travel is life. So pack that bag, kiss your cat goodbye and set off to Kerameikos! A neighbourhood in Athens, it's a fabulous base for discovering this sensational city's sights. The capital of Greece is home to around 650,000 people and a fantastic place to experience the nation's culture and history. From Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, Kerameikos is about 20 kilometres to the west. If you're arriving from the city centre, you'll find it 0.8 kilometres to the west.

This city isn't short on sensational things to do, and many of them are found near Kerameikos. It's not easy to pick the best attractions, but the Parthenon and Acropolis are two you should not miss. Don't forget to put Syntagma Square and the Acropolis Museum on your schedule too. While you're here, consider checking out other neighbourhoods to taste more of what Athens has to offer. Thissio and Gazi are good suggestions that are nearby.

Of course, among the first stops you're going to want to make is Roman Agora. This internationally renowned sight is located just 1 kilometre southeast of Kerameikos.

No idea what to look at in the centre of the city? Kick off a satisfying day of sightseeing at the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Benaki Museum. To get an even better feel for your surrounds, also swing by the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and Mount Lycabettus.

Hoping to get a feel for the cultural scene? Go to the Athens National Gallery, the Pandora Art Gallery, the Athens Gallery and the Onassis Cultural Centre.

Take some time out as you potter through the stimulating art collections at the Benaki Islamic Art Museum, the Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art, the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of the City of Athens. Later, why not go to a local café and muse over your time there?

Sometimes it's the raved-about exhibits that catch our eye. Other times it's an under-valued object that's been hidden in a dim corner. Keep an eye out for both at the Technopolis, the National Historical Museum, Athens Planetarium and the Athens War Museum.

There's nothing like the feeling of anticipation when a live show is about to get under way. Take your seat and wait for the curtains to go up at Lycabettus Theatre, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Coronet Theatre and the Athens Concert Hall.

Sometimes kids can have fun in the most unexpected places. Make some memories with them at the National Library of Greece, the Museum of Greek Children's Art, the Eugenides Foundation and the Emotions Museum of Childhood.

Few things calm a frantic mind quite like the smells, sights and sounds of the outdoors. Experience it for yourself at the Athens National Garden, Areopagus Hill, Hill of the Nymphs and Hymettus.

One of the most appealing things about this place is its nearby green spaces. Among the hustle and bustle, there are plenty of spots to take a short walk or read a book. Pedion Areos Park, Plato's Academy Park and Stavros Niarchos Park are great options.

Buy the essentials or search for some unusual gifts. Purchase all you need at Monastiraki Flea Market, Athens Central Market, Athens Heart Mall and Sunday Flea Market.

The surrounding heritage attractions will provide you with a better understanding of the area's interesting past. The Ancient Agora, Hellenic Parliament, the Filopappos Hill and the Arch of Hadrian are certainly not to be missed.

If you're interested in different religions, you ought to check out the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike, Greek Evangelical Church and the Temple of Hephaestos.

Get ready to kit yourself out in yellow and black and cheer until you lose your voice. The home of the A.E.K Athens, Athens Olympic Stadium is the perfect place to get your fill of soccer entertainment.
