Holiday In Brisbane

Being the capital of Queensland and Australia’s third-largest city might be enough for some towns, but not Brisbane.

It’s also got some of the country’s best modern art, tons of sunny days and is the centre of an ongoing debate: Is it Australia’s coolest city? (One travel site to remain anonymous seems to think so.) You can have it all—in the city that has it all—with Brisbane package deals.

Things to Do in Brisbane

We know why you’re really here: koalas! The world’s oldest and largest refuge for these adorable marsupials, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, is just 12 km southwest of central Brisbane. Hop in one of lastminute.co.nz’s excellent Brisbane car hire options and you’ll be there before you can say “OMG baby koalas!!!” (Bonus: It’s also home to equally adorbs wombats and platypuses.)

Now that you’ve got your koala photo op, it’s time to explore. On the South Bank, head to the Parklands for a ride on the Wheel of Brisbane, where you’ll have 360-degree views of the city. Back on solid ground, check out Brisbane’s very own tropical lagoon, aka Streets Beach. South Brisbane’s also got the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and the Sciencentre, so if you dig art that involves removing your shoes or always wanted to learn how to measure a crocodile, now’s your chance.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

So what’s on the North Bank, you ask? Well, across the river is where you’ll find the shopping! Join 26 million visitors (annually—not at the same time) at the Queen Street Mall to browse everything from upscale international brands to farmers market finds. You can’t take home a real koala, but you can definitely find koala-shaped bum bags, belt buckles and pretty much anything else here. Other buys that scream “Brisbane holiday!”: Queensland tea towels, opal jewellery and honey chocolate—which yes, is just as delicious as it sounds.

If dining in Sydney is the flashy, bling-wearing cousin and Melbourne is the ever-changing hipster, dining on holiday in Brisbane is a lot like a laid-back California surfer. In the Golden Triangle neighbourhood, you’ll find riverview dining with the freshest surf and turf around for cheap eats, head east to New Farm, home to hostels and backpacker culture. In-between budgets are sure to find a feast in the eclectic West End, which delivers tantalizing tastes from Thai to Turkish.

Do you have the “fortitude” for a wild night out in Brisbane? No, we’re not just using big words. Night owls will want to book Brisbane packages in the Fortitude Valley neighbourhood. Feel free to wear your highest heels, because you won’t have to walk far with dozens of bars and clubs within just a few blocks. Need to restore some brain cells? You’re in luck. It’s home to some of the city’s best cafes, too.

What’s Next?

Whether you call it “Brizzie”, “Briz Vegas” or just “Brisbane”, a city by any other name simply wouldn’t be such an awesome getaway. Book one of our packages to Brisbane, then grab a dagwood dog and a pint and you’re well on your way to holiday fun.
