You have holiday leave coming up, but you want more than the “same old, same old” this time. You need heritage! History! Adult beverages! (Lots of those.) You need accommodation in Berlin! Set in the northeast corner of Germany, it’s more than just the country’s capital. “The Millennium City” is here to introduce you to a getaway with just one setting: sophistication overload.
Get on top of your Berlin holiday with a visit to the Fernsehturm, or TV Tower, which is the tallest structure in Germany. At 207 m, you can see everything from its observation deck, including Brandenburg Gate and Olympic Stadium. If you need a little air, hook up with a sightseeing cruise along the River Spree. You can see the Berlin Cathedral, Bellevue Palace and the sweeping arches and golden hues of the House of World Cultures, a contemporary arts building—without even lifting a toe.
If you came to party, there’s just one word you need to know: Friedrichshain (pronouncing it is another story). This large neighbourhood east of the city centre always brings the heat when it comes to nightlife. Start your pregame near Boxhagener Platz, where you’ll find more pubs that you know what to do with. Then head to the waterfront for the city’s legendary clubs, where you can bust a move ‘til sunrise. If you’re stumbling home to your Berlin accommodation, just look up! The familiar TV Tower can be seen from nearly anywhere in the city, like a beacon guiding the drunk home.
Flights to Berlin land at Tegel Airport (TXL), 10 km northwest of downtown. When it comes to getting around, the U-Bahn (or, “the U”) is your new best friend. There are several express buses that connect the airport with the U; for most Berlin hotels, the best places to get dropped are Hauptbahnhof, the city’s main railway station, or Zoologischer Garten, west of downtown at the intersection of several subway lines. Like most things in Germany, public transportation is efficient and easy to use, and it’ll get you to most attractions. Late night pounding schwarzbier? Taxis are happy to pick up where the U leaves off.
In the summer, Belin has gorgeous weather in the mid-20s and plenty of outdoor cafes where you can relax with a strudel and a coffee and watch the world go by. Don’t worry, there are plenty of outdoor biergartens and festivals too! In the winter, Germany hotels are your front-row seat to the Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Markets) in December, and Berlin’s are a bucket-list item for many travellers. Mouthfuls of mulled wine and arms packed with handmade presents might slow you down, but you could spend a whole trip traversing the more than 50 markets throughout the city.
Grab your beer stein and yell a hearty “Prost”! (OK, maybe not if you’re at work). You’re about to find great deals on hotels in Berlin thanks to lastminute.com.au. Then pack up your dirndl or lederhosen and get on your way to Deutschland.
