On October 31st, I checked into the Four Points in Newark around 12:30 PM. I changed into some clothes and lay in bed for a few minutes before leaving for an appointment at 2:00pm. Although the sheets were clean, I smelled a strange odor. I didn’t think much of it and left for my appointment. When I returned, I lay back in bed. I smelled a maple-and-urine smell I couldn’t shake. The sheets appeared clean. I pulled back the mattress protector to find a large urine stain on the mattress. I immediately went downstairs to guest services, showed them pictures of the room, and they offered to switch my room. When I arrived at the new room, the door was open, and the cleaning staff was finishing cleaning it. I explained I had been moved there and mentioned my concerns about the previous room. They reassured me it was clean. I pulled back the mattress protector, only to find another mattress with urine stains. I called the cleaning staff outside the room back, to have a look. They seemed unfazed by this discovery. I then went downstairs and showed guest services a photo of the mattress. Lawrence at guest services assured me he would personally ensure the third room met standards. After about 15 minutes, he returned to say the available room had a strong odor and wouldn't meet my standards. He advised me it was best to find another hotel. I am from NC, traveling alone, and had to find a hotel that offered late check-ins. At 8pm.
