It was a unique stay. The property was great with gorgeous finishes. Some say the property is haunted. I did not find any proof of this. The staff at the property were friendly and very helpful. Particularly the front desk. I had to leave early but because of the staff would definitely return when back in the area.
This was our first time staying at the hotel,we had trouble getting into the room,I had to go down stairs and have our room keys reactiviated, then our room was so cold like walking into a walk in freezer.I called the front desk and the girl on duty told me how to work the heater in our room. It finally warmed up after about an hour ,then the next morning I got up to go get my husband and myself breakfast couldn't get the deadbolt unlocked to get out of the room.It took my husband turning using both hands to finally get it to unlock.I was like are we locked in from the inside.lol. The bed was hard neither one of us slept good,if it hadn't been that we were from out of town I would've have left in the middle of the night. We were in room 511.
The hotel itself was very clean and the front desk worker was very nice, breakfast was good.
The Lafayette is an old hotel. The rooms are very small and there doesn’t seem to be any soundproofing between rooms. We could clearly hear the conversation next door. The maids come by fairly early, and even if your “Do Not Disturb” sign is on the door, your are awoken but the squeaky wheels of their cart and their knock on other doors, and their call of “Housekeeping”.
We had a room with 2 twin beds and there was no room to leave open even one of our suitcases. The food in the restaurant was adequate, ( go to Austyn’s across the street for a better meal) and the bar was fine. The employees were helpful and friendly, except for one bartender who charged us $15 for a shot of low end tequila, even after we explained we had been charged much less the night before. Her colleague the next day repaired the mistake and we appreciated that.
The last straw for me happened on the last night when the fire alarm went off at 3 am for several minutes and then again at 6 am. We asked when we checked out that morning and were told it was due to some construction work. No offered us a discount of any kind for the inconvenience. I expected more.
These photos from the lobby show the hotel in two different floods. It made me wonder if there could be underlying mold.
The Layfette is a historic hotel so it comes with the quirkiness of age. The floors squeak and the rooms are more compact but that is just part of the experience of staying in a hotel from another era. Our room had a newly redone bath and shower in a period black and white tile that fit the theme. The best surprise of the two-day visit was the breakfast. We are all accustomed to the typical hotel breakfast with plastic eggs, etc but the Layfette must have a Michelin Chef in that kitchen. They provide a voucher for a Traditional Breakfast or you can apply that toward anything on the menu, just pay the difference. I had the General's Pancakes and then the Stuffed French Toast. WOW! The extra flavors in both of these were just perfect. Everything was so good! Every other hotel breakfast will be nothing but a disappointment. A great start to the morning.
This is a wonderful old hotel with great on site dining. The rooms have been modernized but it still feels like an old hotel. It is right on the river and has a great local feel to it.
