We probably don’t need to tell you about San Diego, California’s 110 km of powdery beaches, heavenly weather and prime tourist attractions. But we do need to tell you about the California burrito: a glorious variation of the classic that incorporates French fries and plenty of cheese. And also yes, the city does have some truly fantastic museums for you to explore.
Outdoor activities in San Diego are as endless as reruns of Next Top Model—and you can work on your tan. Start your day at Ferry Landing Marketplace on Coronado Island. Grab an ice cream cone (you’ll work off those calories) and take a walk in Centennial Park for the best views of the downtown San Diego skyline. Then get out on the water with a kayak rental, or rent a bike and take a tour of the island’s candy shops—your basket will be full of sweet treats to take back to your accommodation in San Diego.
Just because Southern California hotels have great weather doesn’t mean you have to spend your whole holiday outside. Amid the 1,200 acres of Balboa Park, you’ll find San Diego’s best museums. Check out the Mingei International Museum to see jars shaped like seal pups, flutes shaped like dogs, fish lanterns on wheels and other artefacts you didn’t even know were missing from your life. Fast forward to modernity at the San Diego Museum of Art, where you can trip out to mind-blowing works from Salvador Dali and Joan Miro.
You’ll fly into San Diego International Airport (SAN), just 4 km from downtown. But before you get the party started, power up with a snooze (or at least drop off your bags). Many of our awesome San Diego hotels offer shuttle service, so you can be napping in no time. However, to really live the Cali lifestyle, you’ll need your own wheels. Get Tokyo drifting in a convertible or channel your West Coast hippie in a hybrid—no judgments. Going straight to the bar? Take Bus 992, which runs downtown and connects with the trolley and other bus routes.
You may have heard that the weather in “America’s Finest City” is, well, perfect year-round, and it’s true. The best time to visit for many travellers is when the mercury dips back at home! And since Australia’s winter coincides with America’s summer, it’s almost as if the travel gods themselves are smiling upon your San Diego holiday. June through August have the best festivals and events around: Comic-Con International is legendary, and there is absolutely nothing more delightful than enjoying a heart-attack-inducing fried chicken sandwich on a glazed donut at the San Diego County Fair on the Fourth of July.
Ready to make like Snoop Dogg and throw it up for the West Coast? lastminute.com.au makes it easy to book the best deals on hotels in San Diego without even leaving the comfort of your chair. Just make sure your co-workers don’t see—we wouldn’t want them to get too jealous.
