Missed the mark, lack of info before arriving

This could be a really cute boutique hotel but completely missed the mark. The front desk decor made the hotel super quaint to enter, but that’s where it stopped. Rooms were very small with many missing amenities and quite a few deficiencies, from door stops to sink drains and proper ventilation. This hotel was also the most expensive on our trip and failed to mention the built in alarm clock that was a construction site next door. We were woken up every morning at 8am as soon as the hammering of scaffolding began. In these old buildings we know the size is usually going to be lacking, but didn’t expect the experience to be just as small.

Really enjoyed our stay and staff were very friendly. Stayed in comfort double room (305), which was perfect for us. There are steps down into the bathroom that we enjoyed the added feature of. Room had a bathtub which was an added bonus. The tub/shower is tucked under the stairs to the next floor, but we are not tall so worked great for us. Lots of restaurant options close to hotel and was a great location for an earlier train from King’s cross. Room does not have fridge which we were prepared for and was no issue as grocery store very short walk away. Would stay here again if back in London.

Good stay next to St. Pancras, Kings Crossing

The staff was so helpful and kind. We were exhausted after our long flight and they helped us get baggage downstairs, reserved dinner seats for us, and were over all just great. The accommodations are pretty basic but clean and well located if you need to leave from St. Pancras-literally up two buildings and across the road.

Great location, lovely staff, comfortable rooms.

Perfect location, lovely room. Was offered a ground floor room or a third floor room and opted for the third floor to try a minimise any underground/street noise which was perfect! I was travelling alone with my 6 year old daughter and felt welcome and safe throughout our visit. She thought the reception desk was really cool!

A good night's rest

I stayed in room 101 in the basement. It was comfy and reaonably sized, although the bathroom was cold and ceiling height was low (not for the tall guests!). Other than the noise of the underground trains passing by, I had a good night's rest here.

nicely laid out reception. Spacious room with comfortable bed. Excellent location for Kings X access. Would use again without hesitation.Stayed at several Kings X area hotels and this is one of the better ones.

Good hotel - very convenient for Kings Cross & St Pancras (which was our priority) - we were also able to walk back from the West end in around 35 mins. Rooms were OK, not luxury, but clean & well maintained. Staff were excellent & very helpful. One hint, we were in the basement (family room for 4), so you do get the sound from the tubes rumbling through, goes quiet after midnight. If you want to avoid that ask for a room on a higher floor.

Brilliant location. Clean but very noisy I am deaf and I found the noise of the nearby tubes very loud. They run until midnight which was unfortunate as I had an early train he next day

OK stay

Friendly staff when checking in. Our room was tiny and the bed wasn’t the most comfortable. No hand towel so we had to use our bath towel to dry our hands. The flooring was lifting in places and the whole place felt tired and in need of a spruce up. Great location for the station and lots of restaurants and bars in the area. Could hear the trains but didn’t mind that.

Why I liked the California

The hotel was right by the tube and Kings Cross station. There’s an amazing Indian restaurant nearby and a corner store. We were warmly greeted and given first floor accommodations. Location is awesome!

We recently stayed at The California and had a mixed experience. The hotel does not quite match the pictures online—it’s much older and smaller than expected, like many places in London, and could use some updates. On the positive side, the staff and cleaning team were very helpful and efficient, and the shower had great water pressure. We also appreciated being able to control the heat in our room, which made our January stay comfortable (though we’re not sure how it would be in the summer). However, there were some major downsides. The room was very small, especially the bathroom, with no toilet roll holder and no hand or face towels provided. The mattresses were far too soft, which left us with some backaches by the end of our stay. Additionally, there was construction right across the street, and the room had little to no sound insulation, making it feel like the workers were practically in the room with us. Overall, while the hotel had some good aspects, it fell short of expectations due to the misleading photos, outdated feel, noise issues, and uncomfortable beds. Would I stay here again? Not if I can help it, unless some updates are made.
