How about a holiday in
Australia's leading fashion, culture and coffee destination, with beautiful architecture, vibrant nightlife and heart-stopping sporting events? Stay in one of our Melbourne hotels and soak up the atmosphere of this sophisticated cosmopolitan city!
History
Since its days as a tiny settlement in the 1830s, Melbourne has expanded and blossomed into the vibrant multi-cultural city it is today. Two of the most historic precincts in Melbourne include Victoria Harbour at
Docklands and Flinders Street Station. History buffs will enjoy visiting the Melbourne Museum - where you'll find Phar Lap's heart – and Australia's oldest prison, the Melbourne Gaol, where Ned Kelly and other famous bushrangers were held.
Things to Do
A great place to start your Melbourne adventure is Federation Square, where you can flit between the Australian Centre for Moving Image and the Ian Potter Centre: National Gallery of Victoria, which are right across from one another. In the square itself, there's always something on, whether it's a fashion parade, exhibition or a street performance. You're bound to be entertained here.
Animal lovers should make a beeline for the Melbourne Zoo and the Melbourne Aquarium, while sports fanatics can grab some tickets to an event at the MCG or Docklands Stadium. For a bit of surf and sand, head to the
St Kilda Beach and then have some fun at Luna Park.
Annual Events
The Melbourne Cup in November is without a doubt the biggest event of the year, but the Australian Open in January, the International Comedy Festival in March/April and the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in March are also noteworthy, so, if you’re planning a date with your mates, plan your break accordingly.
Shopping, Dining and Nightlife
Max out your credit cards along Chapel Street, Collins Street, Howey Place, Elizabeth Street and Bridge Road or navigate your way around the little laneways and arcades that are brimming with quirky boutiques and trendy cafes. On the other hand, if market shopping is what you're after, make sure you hit up the famous Queen Victoria Markets in
North Melbourne.
After all that shopping, you can refuel in the well-known coffee districts of
St Kilda,
Fitzroy and Lygon Street, or sit down for a fancy meal in
Southbank.
In the evening, you can try your luck at the Crown Casino in
South Yarra or party like there's no tomorrow in one of the pumping nightclubs in the
Melbourne CBD. You'll also find plenty of laid-back watering holes and up-market cocktail bars around the place, if that's more your style.
