Unfortunately, our stay at The Chancellor on Hobson was disappointing. The room had a terrible smell, which meant we had to keep the outside door open the entire time just to get some fresh air. The flooring just inside the door was rotting and lifted, making it a bit of a hazard. The shower was only shoulder height, which was really inconvenient, and the bath had visible chunks missing. Overall, the room felt very run-down and poorly maintained. That said, the one saving grace was the staff—they were absolutely amazing. Friendly, helpful, and genuinely welcoming. It’s a shame the room didn’t live up to the same standard.

We had some issues with our air conditioner in the room on the sunny side of the hotel and the lovely staff moved us with no fuss. I really enjoy staying there. We have been there more than three times now and will continue to use this hotel.

Good place to stay

My wife and I stayed here our first two nights in New Zealand from USA in mid-February 2025. The location is excellent, within walking distance of the harbor and a full service grocery. The front desk staff were helpful, friendly, and accommodating. The room, while dated, was in good condition and the bed very comfortable. It was warm outside but the air conditioning worked nicely. The modest kitchen facility in our room served our needs. We would stay again. (Sorry, world about our nation's mistake in re-electing Trump.)
