We had a private room it had a sink which was nice. They had plenty of bathrooms so no waits for showers or anything like that. Free breakfast! Lots of neat areas to hang out in. The location was the main selling feature it would be triple the price to stay in that area any other way

Great rates, awesome staff!

This place couldn't be nicer. From the cleanliness, to access to facilities, to the amazing (and always smiling) staff, if you don't enjoy your stay here, it's probably a you problem. There's a huge kitchen with all the implements you could need, including a rice cooker and free rice! Coffee and tea are available 24/7, and the large common/dining are is perfect for meeting your fellow travelers. And just to mention it again, everything from the rooms to the hallways to the kitchen and dining room were almost always spotless, no matter what time of day. All in all, I can't recommend HI San Diego Downtown enough.

Everyone I encountered was incredibly nice, welcoming and helpful. Distance-wise, this was a great place to stay if attending a conference at the Convention Center. I felt very safe as a single woman travelling alone. This was my first experience in a hostel, and I was not disappointed. Will definitely stay in HI locations in the future! The real downside of this location is the excessive loud noise because of its location. Unfortunately there’s not much the hostel can do about this other than maybe install windows that are more sound-insulating. If you are interested in night life, this is the perfect hostel. If you’re not and like to go to bed at 10pm, that’s nearly impossible without using the ear plugs that the hostel graciously provides. I was staying in one of the rooms directly adjacent to the street, so noise levels would probably be better in one of the inner-circle rooms. Also, in the morning it was a bit tough to get access to the bathrooms because everyone is trying to take a shower, and there’s limited facilities. I resolved this issue for myself by opting to shower at night when the facilities are much less busy. Overall, a great place to stay. Just consider the noise at night and accessibility to bathrooms/showers.
